Hello everyone! I've been fishing for many years now, and want to get a yak for extra fun! I am looking at the Old Time Predator 13. Can I get some opinions on it? Should I look at something else instead? Also some of my buddies want to go on a weekend fishing trip, load gear on the yaks and take off. Where would be a good place to go in Utah? Thanks for the input! See ya on the water!

I know nothing bad about that 'yak. Oughta be just fine for anywhere in Utah.
I recommend you take it to some protected water like Bountiful Pond the first time, and just learn to paddle it around. It's wise to practice getting in and out of one in shallow water - and DO wear a PFD at all times in a 'yak. Leave all your expensive fishing gear at home at first because you just might roll once or twice.

I'm in the market for a kayak also so I'm gonna jump on board and see if I can stir up some Q&A. I returned a Moken 14 today that had a hole in it...don't even ask. I've heard great things about the Tarpon 120 and a Predator 13 was on my list to look at.
I'm new to the whole kayak thing. The Moken was great but fool me once. Are you dead set on a Predator? What made you decide on that one? I

After reading a lot about other brands(wilderness systems, ocean kayak, Jackson, ascend, etc) I liked the predator the best. I have an old Old Town canoe that I have NO complaints about. Brand loyalty? Maybe. Also for the money it seems the predator is the best deal for the money. The stability also really made me lean that way. I would like to demo it, but not sure where in Utah? The layout of the predator also is a plus for me. A good comfortable seat is also needed, which the predator has. Any thoughts?

I'm not in the market but I had to stop in at the lifetime store in clear field/Layton to help my brother with a trailer and I just happened to notice they have a selection of yaks. Thought I would pass that along for those interested.

Just want to through this out there. The NFO Stingray Kayak is on sale for $999. Totally inflatable with a dropped stitch floor that is tough as heck. Same material the inflatable SUP's are made out of.
Lighter and rolls up.
Comes with a pump and an aluminum paddle. And you can stand up in it.

Just purchased the Predator13. Run the first test on Mantua last friday. Worked great. Stable, lots of storage and easy to paddle. I am 6'2" and 255 with bad knees and was able to stand to sight fish easily.

That's good looking! Any complaints about it? What paddle and length did you get?

Thanks for the compliments, no complaints yet. It is heavier than my old one but it was expected and well worth it. I will add an anchor trolley and a possibly a rudder. I got the 250cm Bending Branches Angler Pro. Now I just need more time on the lake.

I am just throwing this out there too. I purchased an Intex Excursion five for fishing and love it. You can youtube reviews and pictures of it. It has plenty of room and the PVC is strong. thinking about putting in a wood floor board like others have suggested in the vidoes. It may be too big for what you are trying to do, but i love it.. Had it on the Berry last weekend, did great.

Looks like you have a nice piece of equipment....just curious why you chose a kayak over a pontoon boat? I would think a pontoon would be far more practical for Utah fisheries.

I just sold a pontoon, still have a sit in kayak. After using the kayak I enjoyed the agility and speed on the water but did not like the confinement after hours on the water. I can also fight the wind a little better when needing to get back to shore. The sit on top kayaks give you free range movement of your body, speed and agility. This one is big enough I can use it on bigger waters or rivers and still be safe and stable.

I was just thinking that wind would be a reason NOT to get one...how can you fish from one in the wind? Aren't you blown all over unless you are rowing?

Having owned and fished from a tube, a 'toon, and a 'yak I am convinced that the 'yak is the least susceptible to wind.
Mine is foot-powered so I can hold into the wind and still cast, if necessary. Or I can drift, controlling my direction with the rudder. I can slow my drift with a wind sock, and by adjusting the position of my anchor trolley, can choose to drift at an angle to the wind, besides.
And there's always the anchor.

That was the reason I chose the FUZION by NFO. But it is also a pontoon. I can use my fins, my oars or stand and use a paddle. Weighs 40lbs with frame and rolls up. Wahoo. Oh and zero wind resistance at 6" thick, but I am sitting well out of the water with the frame. Without frame I can sit on a chair or box.

I admit the FUZION has a lot going for it. Every choice has its good and bad points, and what works best for one person depends largely on the angling techniques involved.

Right.
Fuzion does cover several. I looked at kayaks as I am getting more interested in rivers. The Fuzion surprised me. And awesome on stillwater. It comes with 3 skegs but I just use the middle one.
