It’s been a while in fact a long while since I have been out fishing so far this year this makes the second time for me. So I was glad that I had blocked this weekend of on the calendar to get out and fish and I could not think of a better place to go. With the new regulations at Yellowstone you now must have your float tube inspected to get a float tube permit sticker. They of course try and make it as convenient as they can for you by making it only available in the park at certain ranger stations and limited hours very kind of them. So luckily I had a couple of friends that were going up early Friday take my boat with them to get it inspected and I drove up solo after work on Friday. The plan was to hit a Lake on Saturday morning then hike into creek that afternoon. It turned out to be quite the hike:

We were the first ones on the lake that morning hiking up at first light and although no monster like last year some decent color full wild Yellowstone cuts came out to play:

Then we the drive to the creek only to find about 30 cars at the trailhead so disappointing. We followed a group of 8 up the mountain and luckily they weren’t fishing the same area I was going in. Luckily the cuts in this river were hungry and I got to get some bendo on the fly rod:

The next morning it was a good thing that I did drive up solo because the guys were a little soar & hung over and when 4 am came and it was time to break down camp I was the only one up doing it so I hike in solo in the moonlight. I thought it was only 3 miles to this lake but I was a bit off on my calculations:

This lake has tons of pup lake trout from 14-20 inches I have heard stories of 20+ pounds coming from there but personally haven’t seen one myself. I am trying for my chance at one of the big brown trout that inhabit the lake and I managed to get one of them:

The early bird does get the worm because the other 4 anglers got there about 2 ½ hours after I did and stayed all afternoon only managing 2 fish for the group. I caught 7 by myself in the 3 hours that I fished it. But then the long drive home solo was rough it is amazing how my old body stiffens up and I forget how to walk after two days of backpacking and 3 hours of riding in the truck until the fuel stop. Hopefully I will get to pull off a few trips in the fall before winter, need to get my hands on some brookies!
