So i've seen these necklaces for sale in various places that have all of the frequently used equipment attached to them for easier access. I've also watched a few videos where the guides are wearing them. I was recently gifted one, and am debating about whether or not to use it or to strip it of all the tools and keep them in my vest. My question is, are they useful enough to use? It seems like they could be handy, but I never was a big fan of things hanging around my neck.... anyone use them and really swear by them?

are you a minimalist? if so they would be perfect. I have one that I wear when I only want to walk 4 steps from the truck to fish with no waders on, or when I fish a few certain places in CO and dont want to bring 27 lbs of spare gear. they have their pro's and their con's

Lanyards definitely have their place for keeping frequently-used tools handy while leaving the bulk of your necessities stowed away... like in a drift boat for example.
A lanyard also compliments wet wading as a cooler option when combined with a lumbar pack (for example) to keep the bulk of your items off your shoulders and allowing for maximum air flow.
Forceps, nippers, tippet spools, floatant, and drying patches are some of the more common items I see on fly fishing lanyards.

I started out with a lanyard and served me well for awhile... It then got to the point where i had to much crap and had to get a bigger sling pack. Not bad to have for backpacking and quick trips however

I use one when all I need is a few tools, tippet, floatant, and a small box or two of flies. I still have both a light vest and a sling pack with multi-pockets when I need (want) more fly boxes, a lunch, rain gear, or just more "stuff".
