Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Daggett County
See Fishing across state lines and reciprocal fishing permits on page 8 for license and permit requirements. •Limit 4 trout or kokanee salmon (a combined total), excluding lake trout, and no more than 3 may be kokanee salmon. •Limit 8 lake trout/mackinaw, only 1 may exceed 28 inches. •All kokanee salmon caught from Sept. 10 through Nov. 30 must be immediately released. +*+*+*+*+*+*++*++*++++*+*++*+*++*++++* Strawberry Reservoir, Wasatch County •Limit 4 trout or kokanee salmon (a combined total). •No more than 2 may be cutthroat trout under 15 inches, and no more than 1 may be a cutthroat trout over 22 inches. •All cutthroat trout from 15 to 22 inches must be immediately released. •Trout and salmon may not be filleted, and the heads or tails may not be removed in the field or in transit. •An angler may have only one daily limit in possession at any time. •Anglers are encouraged to voluntarily release all cutthroat trout. •Any trout with cutthroat characteristics (not necessarily jaw slashing) is considered to be a cutthroat trout. Slash marks under the jaw should not be used to distinguish Bear Lake cutthroat trout from rainbow trout at Strawberry. Slashing is sometimes absent on Bear Lake cutthroats and sometimes visible on rainbows. Better characteristics are deep orange pelvic and anal fins on the cutthroats, and white-tipped pink to gray-green pelvic and anal fins on the rainbows. Rainbows also have the pinkish lateral stripe on the sides (see fish descriptions beginning on page 47 of this guide for more information). See anything about salmon spawn in the regs on strawberry HMMM I don't. But i see information at flaming gorge. last time i checked they were a couple hundred miles away from each other and not connected. JUST SAYIN [signature]

I was looking at the same thing earlier last month and could not find and rule about keeping salmon in the Berry, even during the spawn. I think that is different in the streams but I believe you are ok keeping red salmon in the lake. There is a change that was proposed that will change that next year but your ok for now, IMO.

Greg when they turn they get really soft and poor quality meat but they taste okay. I prefer not to chase them after they turn. Good luck. J

You had enough time to get on Big Fish Tackle .com, but not enough time to get on the UDWR site and look at the regulations for Strawberry? I guess it could've waited until you got off work. Oh, I guess it did. Since there are no special regulations at Strawberry concerning spawning Kokanee Salmon, you can keep them. For now at least.
There is a proposal to make the restriction at Flaming Gorge a statewide restriction. From the RAC proposal: Quote:SUBJECT: 2016 Fishing Regulation Proposals [red]⫸[/red][orange]<{[/orange][yellow]{{[/yellow][green]{{[/green][size 4][blue]⦇[/blue][/size][blue]°[/blue][#8000FF]>[/#8000FF] [signature]

That says stream. Not lake. So I would take that to mean if you caught a red Koke out on the lake you could keep it, even with the rule change. All streams are prohibited during the salmon run. DWR needs some clarification here?

Nope. Statewide means statewide.

There is no such thing as a dumb question here on BFT. Keep on asking them. I am sure there were a few people in the 570 views this has gotten that didn't know the answer either.
Quite frankly I am a little stunned by some of the harsh replies found in this thread.[:|] [signature]

I would assume they get enough spawners at strawberry visitor center that they don't mind people harassing the red ones in the lake. At Flaming Gorge there is more of a wild population that spawns in the Lake and they don't want people messing with them when they don't taste good anyways. If there is excess fish then it's like Powell. Let people do what they want with them.

Waaa. Can't see why people can't access the guidebooks online and learn how to read them. It ain't that hard. There are currently no restrictions on keeping Kokanee that are spawning at Strawberry. Of course it's easier to let someone else look it up for you.
