Carp everywhere in the lower Provo?
#1
While trying for trout in the downtown area of the Provo, I noticed the carp had really moved in all the way up to the dam by DI...I assume they are spawning? Also, I hooked into two giant carp on night crawlers which was an absolute blast! They spat the hook both times though. Anybody have tips on the type of hook/setup and technique to land them successfully?

Carp are a blast to catch! My kids get so excited just because of their size and power! We just use a 1/0 hook, usually with dough balls or worms. But my favorite by far is sticking them with an arrow.[sly]

That's my preferred method as well [Wink] Thanks for the tip! I watched an informational video about carp that suggested a 1/0 hook too and mentioned that if you horse them too hard, the hook will rip through their rubbery mouths. I'm pretty sure that's what I was doing..it was sure fun while they were on though! One of them jumped 2 feet out of the water like a salmon.

I use boilies on a smallish treble hook. I have had them break my line but I don't recall them ever pulling a hook. In fact once they are in its kind of like trying to remove a hook from an old tire. My boilies consist of corn flakes run in the blender until they are like flour, egg, canned corn juice, and a bit of anise oil, make dough roll it into long roll then cut into 1/4 -3/8" pieces, boil then freeze what Im not going to use.

Circle hooks work well from the feed back ive gotten from guys in Idaho that target them on spinning gear.

Dunno about that specifically, but I remember at a community pond near where I grew up that the bucket brigade would catch channel cats on shrimp and then leave them to rot on the shore. Went down on a hot July day with my buddy one time when I was like 12 years old and barely made it out without suffocating on the smell.

When i go after carp, I use a 6ft UL strung up with 4 lb test. I set it up like a Carolina rig, with a1/4 egg sinker and a size 1 circle hook. Make sure your drag is set right, because they will take your pole. Carp are a great fight on light gear!

I've been wrecking the carp on my lunch breaks, closer to the lake. I usually get a couple per day and at 6-8lbs each, they're no joke.

I've been using my Gulp minnows and leeches. They'll take both. I sure wish the walleye would.[sly] I get through about 20 carp before I see a walleye.

Still lots of fun though!

I have better luck with a smaller hook--size 6 or 8. Carp have small mouths for such big fish and I think a smaller bait usually works better. In the river worms and grasshoppers are both great baits.
