Stacked at the berry 9-23
#1
Hit the berry on Wednesday with my dad and was able to find the fish pretty quickly. Finding them was the easy part. They were really finicky that day and we had to work really hard for every fish. We trolled rapalas and spoons and threw lots of jigs tipped with bait. Both methods worked equally but it was a tough day. The fish are stacked down deep due to the warm water, and I do mean stacked! The water is still fairly clear but the algae is starting to show as you will see in the photos. Still a fun day to be out there.

Those marks look like Kokanee. The non spawners are still in open water waiting to be caught.

That was my first thought too but we were pulling up rainbows and cutts from down there. Those clusters of fish could be a mix of all 3 species.

Water is starting to turn today! We were sight casting the cuts on top and there was a lot of algae bubbling up! What was the temp on Wednesday? Was low fifties today...

Hmm maybe soon I can get up To strawberry for some fall action. Not holding my breath though.

I will throw my 2 cents in for what it is worth. Chubs. Cutts, Rainbows do not school that tight, and might not be that shallow. Could be. Non spawning Kokes, maybe, I would think deeper.

I graphed a school like that, bait jigged and got 4 nice chubs. Cutts could be in the area, looking for the same food source or even small chubs.

Chubs definitely school.

Only a guess.

HD, you saying that the water temps were in the low 50's yesterday sure isn't what I measured them as. In the morning I measured them at 58-59°. By the end of the day, they were 60-61°. I think your thermometer is not right ... or mine isn't.

If the temps were in the low 50's, I think you'd hear of many reports of anglers in the Renegade area boating 50-100 fish per day. But that's just my belief.

I too was out on the Berry Saturday. I wonder if I seen you or you seen me.

Looks like you have a Lowrance HDS5 ? I have one on a boat that I just bought. How do you zoom in on a certain depth and turn up or down the sensatvity?

and Tue I will take my Underwater Video Camera
and see what you are looking at
there is a lot of places in strawberry where their is no Kokes
and I think we have a few weeks before the water turns over.

Water turns when the surface water is 39 degrees Fahrenheit. Just because the algae is starting to die doesn't mean the water is turning.

Well, maybe its not officially "turning", but conditions were definitely much different than two weeks ago when we were there. Yeah, algae is during off like crazy and water temps have dropped even though the outside temps have been warm. The biggest thing we noticed were tons of cutts cruising the surface! It almost looked like boils at some times. I'm not saying it has turned over yet, but its definitely changing into fall mode up there now.

I could be wrong, but I thought I saw 54 on the screen...I know I never saw 60 though we were off by 2pm.

The water temp when I was there on Wednesday was 58 in the morning and 60 around noon. This heat is definitely not helping the lake to turn over. I was seeing a rainbow or cutthroat cruising the surface on occasion, but no chubs. I did fish the shallows too but that wasn't as productive as the deeper water.
