Idaho Sturgeon
#1
WOW !!!
What a great outing. My son and I went on our annual sturgeon trip to Idaho this past week and had a great time. The weather was awesome....little or no wind the whole time. We arrived at camp Thursday around 6 pm and headed for our favorite hole. We caught 4 sturgeon the smallest 6' and the longest 7'4". The trip is off to a good start. Gazed at the stars on a beautiful clear sky. Next morning we are on the water fishing by 7:00 am. We fished our favorite hole until 10:00 am with no love. Decided to try a new hole and caught 8 sturgeon. In the afternoon went back to our favorite hole and caught 4 more. Headed back to camp at 8 pm. 13 hours in the boat seems to go by a lot faster than 8 hours at work !! Friday morning back to the favorite...caught 3, the biggest 8' 2". Tried the new hole again in the afternoon and caught 8. Biggest 7' 3". Headed back to our favorite hole and caught 6. Back to camp...listened to the coyotes howl then hit the sack. Saturday fished the favorite and caught 6 sturgeon.....4 sturgeon before 9 am and had a double. The double was a problem....with two 6' plus fish pulling the boat different directions it was a losing battle for us .....we lost 1 to the anchor rope.
38 surgeon caught with 19 over 6'. We caught a few 2 footers which was nice just for the sake of knowing there is a younger generation coming.
Hats off to those that manage these magnificent Idaho state treasures. All of the fish we caught looked fat and healthy...they had lots of life. Many of the big ones gave us a good 15 to 20 minutes of battle.

Congratulations Rob on a great trip. Half of the battle is the weather and if the weather is calm it greatly increases the odds of catching sturgeon.

Kent, you had to bring up the floating green stuff !! It was about as bad as usual. We had to move from one side of the river to the other to avoid it. I would say it was pretty typical for when I have been up there.
My son has only been there in the fall. He asked me if it is better or worse in the spring....remind me Kent....which season seems worse??

Thanks Kevin....it is fun to fish for something really different once in a while. Not for everyone I guess but I enjoy it at least once a year (I would like to go twice a year!!).

Much worse in the fall. And also having little wind always makes it much worse.

This is on my bucket list. I would love to figure out how to do this. Are there any good guides up there that any one has used that would recommend? I have a boat but dont think any of my gear would work.
