Berry Less Known Tools of the trade
#1
Good morning everybody,

I'm taking a friend and his wife and kids fishing on Saturday and want to give them a great time !!!

My plan is to troll a bit until we find some fish, and then jig.

I've had good success with Pearl colored tube jigs with worms or chub meat on them for both trolling and jigging.

I've also trolled with a white fly with a worm on it and also with rapallas. I'm wondering if there are any other baits you can use with the tube jigs that attract the fish. I've been thinking of the following, but haven't tried any:

Velveeta Cheese
Power Bait
Marshmallow
Liquid Trout Attractant
Shrimp (raw? or canned little orange cooked ones?)
Crawdads

Anyway, I'm going to see what I can figure out by experimenting with a couple of the above, but would really appreciate if you could share your experiences with the above baits, or if you have some you've found successful that aren't on the list.

Thanks a bunch !! I'll be sure to report the trip on this post Saturday or Sunday after the trip.

Raw shrimp. PowerBait will work, but definitely not for trolling and when vertically jigging you only get one jerk before the PowerBait falls off your single hook.

I find shrimp works just as good as cutbait and for me it's easier to deal with than cutbait or worms.

I would recommend staying clear of canned salad shrimp as well. My experience is that they are small enough that when canned they almost crumble apart when you try to put a hook through them. Another bait that takes only one hit to clean the hook, if you are able to get down to them on the hook at all.

Well, here's how the trip went.

I took a friend and his family fishing. We launched from the main marina at Strawberry and buzzed up to Mud Creek. We fished it for about 30 minutes and didn't get a nibble. We saw several schools of fish cruise under our boat with the fish finder, but none were hungry.

We decided to head to the east side of strawberry just south of the Ladders. Again, saw fish, but none were biting.

So I took them on a little ride through the narrows from the east side of Strawberry (across from Haws Point) around the horse shoe so that we came out across from Renegade. We tried a couple spots in the narrows, but didn't get anything.

We saw a bunch of boats in Renegade Bay and decided that they must know something we didn't. So we tried it out. We saw several fish on the finder, but didn't catch any for a while. Eventually, I landed a pretty rainbow, but that was the only fish for the day.

Not quite sure why it didn't turn out to be a great fish day, but we did have a great time on the boat and enjoyed some fabulous scenery at Strawberry and throughout the narrows.

We were using tube jiggs tipped with worms. We put some trout attractant on a couple of the tube jiggs to see if it would help, but it didn't.

Anyway, just another quirk of Strawberry. Hopefully we'll catch some more next time. See ya all later.

Curious why you didn't try any of our suggestions? From my personal experience, tipping with night crawlers is often the least effective bait at Strawberry.

You are absolutely right. I got in a hurry and had 2 dozen night crawlers in the fridge and just was too dumb to take the time to prep for the trip.. (yes, I am dumb).

We did try trout attractant and some power bait a bit, but no success on either of those.

I will be going out 2-3 more times this season though and will try out the suggested baits and techniques. I do appreciate all the help. One of these days I'll figure it all out :-)

The $9 or $10 bags of 1lb of raw shrimp are cheaper to use than worms or power bait, if you put 6-8 in a tupperware container or ziploc bag and use a third of a shrimp per hook. Just sayin.

Excellent plan. I'm going to buy some today !!

Does shrimp work as those chub minnows that you cut and use 1/4th on the hook?

I was up there last Thursday and we had slow cutt action as well... Water was still 65 deg, may take a few more of these storms to kick them into gear.
