Mantua Ice!!!!
#1
Drove by today and Mantua was tacked over, so was the Bear River in Benson that usually takes a lot of cold to do. Anyway maybe a week from now if it stays really cold and it will be game on. Thought you might be interested. Later J

Looks of the weather report it might get there about the time it melts off. Looks like Friday is back in the 40's so might not be enough to fish it yet. But it looks good to see ice starting. Later J

I figure that KSL story with the lady falling through the ice there today will probably let the crowds know anyway. Crazy what people do when their dogs are in trouble, guess she didn't think before she acted. Sure lucky for her that help was close. Sounds like the shade affect made the ice at the edge strong enough to hold for 50' or so then the sun had probably cut the thickness. Anyway not thick enough yet. Later J

There has always been the want to get the first shot at the fish before the hordes arrive and I guess I'm a blabber mouth for letting the cat out of the bag but I always appreciate those that let me know something so I don't have to take a drive to check it out. By the way, I expect to see the brave ones hit the ice there today. Should be 3" today, but make sure you check several times on the way out. The close in ice froze a while before the main body of the lake did. I didn't see anyone there last night when I drove past, but I bet I will tonight. I still need a couple more inches for this fat boy to dare go out but I have fished this thickness before. Well that assumes there is 2.5 to 3" of ice. Maybe this is a good time to wear waders and a float tube when you go out. Anyway good luck and be safe. Later J

I always thought of "first icers" to be a whole like Jihadi mine detectors: a guy with fingers in his ears, stomping one foot.

Effective, but a bit too "one time use" for me, thanks.

Just ran over and checked. There are two spots people have traveled out. About 75 yards from the ramp and about 100 yard out from the south side.

Just driving by and no one on deck now, but if you've been watching the Hyrum Damcam it was iced yesterday and mostly open again today so a little warmth is a killer on early ice. Be very careful everyone. Check often and have your flotation. I can't imagine how it would suck to fall through and get stuck under the ice. Personal nightmare there. Thanks for the report LB3333. Let's us know it's possible if your crazy and skinny. Later J

Hey Mike nice Koke in your pic they must be from the gorge. i agree this is not a good time to try your luck on the ice. I have been stupid before at Bear Lake and been on 2" ice for Cisco but I was close to shore and knew I'd touch bottom and only get wet if I fell through. Current conditions require you to go out on lakes too far to get yourself out if you go through and the further you walk on ice the better chance you have of finding a thin spot. And the fishing isn't really that much better than it will be when the lake hits 4", but I know everyone is excited to go too so hopefully they will be careful and prepare per the great tips that other posts have provided on the forum. As for me I'm ok to wait a little longer. See you on the thicker deck. Later J
