Take a guess

I cleaned out some of my old tackle boxes and found these in the bottom of one.
I think I bought these 40 or more years ago and I know I've never used them.
I'm sure the person who designed them lived in SLC and would be known by most fisherman at that time.

There was a tackle shop in the downtown area of Salt Lake,
it may have been the first and only tackle shop in the state at the time, I believe that's where I bought the lures.

Take your best shot. Name the store, name the designer.

Creepy Crawler Bug Maker. Jakks was a manufacturer, I think Mattel made one also. My kids had one.

Ray Johnson "Real Minnow" lures. Junk. I always doubted their ability to catch fish. I figured he was telling everybody that he caught fish on real minnows, but tried to cash in on it by producing "Real Minnow" lures.

Don't remember a tackle shop in the downtown area, but Angler's Inn was the first tackle shop that I was aware of.

Ray Johnson lures. I don't know if he is still around. He used to live in So. Salt Lake. He used to try to break all the state fish records (he did have some). Don't know if he is still in the books, but he did catch a lot of big Mac's and Browns up at Flaming Gorge. He supposedly stayed in a cave up there. He personally told me that all his fish were caught on his lures. I doubt that claim, but really don't know. I was going to go fishing with him at the gorge, but he didn't show up. I tried his lures quite a bit, but never got so much as a hit on one. Some of his lures have a little hole near the head with some absorbent material in it to add scent.

Yes, Ray Johnson was the guy pushing the lure.

The tackle shop was long before Anglers Inn.
Located at about 2nd or 3rd south and 200 east.
The owner also had a lure that he designed, I did use it at the berry at the time and it did catch small bows.
It was a semi-hard plastic. see pic below.

I heard of him years ago and always remembered hi as the Flaming Gorge Hermit.

In 2013 every trip I made to the Gorge Ray was out there fishing at least 20 trips. I'm pretty sure that I was there the day the guy that wrote the article and his dad fished with him. It was the only time I seen him alone. Most of the day was one of those calm days that you could hear everything that anybody said. Ray never quit talking! At first I thought it was quite interesting listening to this guy that was always too grumpy to say hello or even look up as he trolled within feet of my boat as I jigged. He told all the stories that the article mentioned and much more, all of which was unbelievable so far out there that I had to research the guy. He is an interesting man for sure. He did mention his extreme dislike for all other anglers many times which might be why he doesn't get on any forums. He has some youtube stuff though and a book. He is a very controversial person also but won't get into that. I haven't seen him much lately though?

He just moved from Manila back to the Wasatch front a few weeks ago, someplace. Not sure the exact town. Kids are both grown and married.

No comment on Ray and his baits, nuff said. The shop you may be thinking of was Wolfes Sporting Goods on Main Street. They were the only place in downtown SLC that sold tackle. They were a great store, were eventually bought out and disappeared.

Yea, we see him alot in summer. He hasn't changed much over the years...still a grumpy 'ole guy who gets hot if someone gets too close. I guy at the Sportsmans Expo a couple years ago told me he fished with him out of Manila and they caught a couple Macs.

Doc Olsen is the tackle shop I was looking for, his home made lure was called Indian joe
Hartt Wixom in his book The extra edge has a reference to Doc and his home made lure.
If you goole Doc Olsen Salt Lake City it will take you right to the page in Wixom's book.

Hartt Wixom, Fishing and hunting writer of many books and a ton of articles and stories for all the outdoor magazines is a Utah native and lives in the St George area.
