Pv crappie jerking 12-4
#1
Took my son out to try for some muskies to no avail. So we decided to jig up some crappie, the fish were stacked super thick in the narrows and we hammered them, ended up catching 4 over 10 biggest was 11.5" most ranged from 8-10". Fish were preferring spoons in orange or chart. There are a ton of crappie my fish finder was covered..

The docks by the ramp where iced up and there was lots of big sheets of ice floating , water temp was 38

sorry no pics

Nice, I can't wait to get out there on the hard deck. Super jealous of all the pics you've been sharing on FB this year. Sometime I'll need to take have your son teach me how to catch a muskie. Still a big fat zero for me.

we fished until about sunset, as the light got lower the fish came out in full force, the hard deck at pv should be epic, next year should be great.. My son caught 3 muskies this year 1 casting and 2 trolling! i was a proud dad!!

Thanks for the report. I am bound and determined to hit Pineview when the ice is thick enough. Are those crappie pretty healthy or are they skinny like the ones in Utah Lake? Did you keep any to eat?

fish are healthy just over populated, the fish over 10" would yield a decent fillet

Thanks for the info. Sounds like we all need to go up and keep a limit.

IMO limit needs to be increased or removed same goes for Perch. Let it go a couple years...as there are a lot of smaller fish and getting stunted in growth as food source is not there with several years of low water.. Just my .02...

I am not all that familiar with Pineview and have always wanted to catch and eat a mess of Crappy. If you send me a map or some directions, I will be more than happy to go help thin them out. You would also have to give me a hint as to what to use. I am pretty good on the trout and perch, but crappy is still a mystery to me.

Launch at Port ramp and head west to towards the dam, use your sonar to locate the fish. Ice spoons and ice jigs is all we needed.. pm me for me info

Just an FYI - the traffic CAM at http://udottraffic.utah.gov/ shows the reservoir.

I agree that we, the anglers need to help thin out the Crappie at Pineview.
I will try to do my part this winter.

I don't have a boat to fish out of, but I do fish the hard deck... a lot. I will have to wait until things have frozen up. Do they move much from soft water to hard water as far as location goes, or do they pretty well stay year around in the same general area?

I did my part a couple weeks ago to thin their numbers. Here is a pic of what I caught. These were all caught down by the dam bouys. There should be plenty of them to go around this winter.
I didn't get any slabs but they are at least big enough to fillet and have something to eat when you are done.
I wish the DWR would raise the limit at PV back to 50. It seems that would be cheaper that stocking it with those legless alligators.

Thanks for posting that pic. That size right there isn't terrible. You can fillet them or scale/de-head and fry them whole. In my house it depends on the kids. I like them whole. My kids like "fish sticks." If the crappie are as thick as everyone is finding, a healthy harvest would help a little. Crappie are very prolific. I believe a mature female produces somewhere around 30-40K eggs during spawning. Even though a lot of those don't survive, if you aren't harvesting enough, they will stunt. A lot of people where I grew up would not put crappie in their ponds because of this. You needed lots of predators OR heavy harvest.

Hopefully with this weather we will see some safe ice on PV soon.

Just a reminder that the canyon road will be closed 9am - 4pm through Wednesday (at least) due to construction of the new aerial pipeline. I bet they didn't plan on this weather, so there's no telling when the road might really be closed.

While the stunting is a problem in a lake where the crappie can consistently have a successful spawn it's less of a problem at PV. Most years the best spawning habitat is high and dry by the time the smoky are emerging from their eggs. The last real successful spawn for the crappie was about 5 years ago when the water was going over the spillway through early summer. That said the 8-10 inchers are about what you'd expect on the slower growth rate of northern waters.

But I do think there are plenty in there to catch if you know the spots.
