BL whitefish run

Hit the whitefish today. Started on the east side at Cisco beach with a bunch of fellow BFT members and did ok. It was a slow start for us,but once we got the technique of the day figured out it was decent.
Between the three of us in the boat we got 16 at Cisco beach and kept 10.
We pulled out around 1:00 and headed over to the state park Marina to fish off the south dike. We finished our limits there and picked up one 25" cutt with a clipped fin, so he ended up on the grill tonight.

10 FOW, 1/8 oz. jigs with white gulp minnow grubs tipped with worm was the combo that worked best for us. Fishing directly below the boat on the west side of the lake worked best and casting and slow retrieve and twitch worked best on the east side.
It took two solid hours to fillet our catch, but we have a load of great fillets for the fryer and smoker.

Too bad you weren't in the picture with those fish so everyone else could tell how big they were. Since I seen them, I know they were really nice sized fish. Notice the tire track for a reference. Hey those white fish are tough to fillet with a hand knife, I spent longer than expected. Seems like the rib bones were really hard to cut through so I went around and that took a lot longer. The big ones ribs are pretty tough. I don't use an electric fillet knife, but if you keep it shaving sharp it does a quick job of it.
The biggest were 19 1/2" long in that picture, so that can be used as a reference.
It took me over 2 hours to fillet our catch that night, it made for a really sore back and feet[]

I figure if I get a limit sometime, I'll try my electric fillet knife and try going through the rib bones. Seems like that ought to save a lot of time. My batch of smoked whitefish is just finishing up. Man they are good, got them just a touch too salty, but they still taste great. Pretty sure they won't last long. Won't be anything to can from this batch. Sorry you're catching so many fish it's beating you up. This old age catches up to us too soon. I sure can't stand standing too long on hard floors anymore. So I'm hoping for fast filleting next time. Later J
