Hey boss. Just got back from there, and honestly I wouldn't waste my time. The ice is holding up close to the bank (approx 3"), but there were little open areas out toward the middle, not sure if they were springs or just melting ice. But if you do go, tread softly.
As for the catching, it's slower than cold tar right now for some reason. I fished for three hours and had a couple soft hits and they wouldn't return. I don't know what's going on that pond. There was one other fisherman by me (getting skunked as well), and more than a few over by the inlet- who knows how they were doing. [signature]

Which part of the lake were you fishing? I was planning to hit there next week.
The fishing was good, while the ice lasted, last year for perch. LT

Hmmm...warm springs...how bout vegetation more likely than any warm springs...those vegetation beds are ...yep, ice will be thinner and Mantua has lots of weed beds...ohhhh ya, weeds will hamper the ice in those locations fer sure...but warm springs not thinking so on Mantua IMO...but for we'll wait as them tasty fish will be there not going anywhere providing Mama Nature cooperates...forecast says yep temps will be dipping...us anglers can only hope...

There are actually several springs in Mantua. As the water coming from them is above freezing, it will rise in the water column until it reaches the surface. That results in thin spots in any existing ice cover. If the ice cover is thin enough, you will see round or oval patches of bare water.

The ice appears to be getting a little thicker on Mantua. I just drilled a few holes out from the dam road and found about 4-5 inches of good ice covered by 2 inches of slushy ice and another 8-10 inches of the fluffy white stuff on top. There are a few tracks from ice fishing sleds both close to shore near the boat ramp as well as going 100 yards or so out from the dam road. I could see a couple people fishing off the point but don't know how they got out there. They could have come from the west side.
I didn't have time to drop a line but it looks like we should be in good shape for this weekend. [signature] |
