Hyrum Dam Boat Ramp
#1
Does anyone know if you can still launch a boat at Hyrum? I can't tell from the dam cams if the ramp is in the ice section or open water? Just curious... Thanks J

It looks like open water to me. One of the camera angles appears to show ice near the dam but it stops a ways out and has open water beyond that.
The Hyrum State Park answering machine claims you can still launch boats.

I can see the fishing dock is open, but the ramp looks close to the ice line. That's why I asked. If I had time, I think a toon troll trip might be really fun. The fish were pushing 17" so I'd like to get a few before the ice crew wipes them out for another year. Early ice fishing should be good this year. Thanks for the help and checking with the state park. Later J

If it is still open as it was Monday you definitely could launch. I was out checking ice conditions on Monday around the valley and will probably be doing another round today. I will let you know tonight about my findings.

Looks like they updated the Hyrum ice conditions on the State Park website today. Here is a snippet.

Reservoir is partially frozen. Ice covers the area at the dam and along the North shore line covering the boat ramp and beach area. The ice is about 1 inch thick and considered unsafe. There is open water on the East side.

The Hyrum Dam Cam seems to agree with that report.

The fishing dock is anchored off shore and may now be in its resting place for the winter.

Hey thanks for the update... I'd been watching it today and thought it still looked open, so that's good to know before trying to head there and fish...

I'd probably head back to Bear Lake if I get to go anyway.. Those smoked whitefish are soooo good that I wouldn't mind one more batch... Have been wanting to can some, but I never have any last long enough to get into the can...

Thanks again for the info, maybe we can get on the ice there in a week or two... Later J

When I was out and about today it looked like you might be able to launch but I was not able walk down and take a look. Looks like some people were ice fishing Newton today but I don't know how thick it is. Every body water in cache valley is still open except newton.

Thanks for the update, looks like it might get cold enough around Christmas to tighten up the lakes again. Maybe? Strange weather the last couple years makes you wonder if the investment in power augers and tents is worthwhile. Thank you for the update and report. J

The Hyrum Dam Cam is showing lots of open water again. Luckily, the forecast calls for a solid week of below freezing temps and even a dip down to -2!
It won't be long now.

As far as I know Newton is the only solid ice in Cache Valley. The girlfriend and I spent the night on Newton last night, and couldn't find consistent fish to save us. I think we only marked 3 or 4 fish all night, and never could get any of them to eat anything. I wish I could figure that place out, it would be nice to have another place to catch panfish. Hopefully Hyrum will lock up in the next few weeks!

The past low water years has made Newton very hit and miss. Until it fills up again full it may be a while yet before it comes back strong again.

Let's hope this cold snap will give us some safe ice. I wanted to try a toon ride at Hyrum today but my wife thinks I should be doing something else today. I figured it would likely be my last chance for awhile. Well I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a quick freeze now. Later J

Wait a minute my sister said that? Nooo you must be joking. lol have a great Christmas wish we could make it up but moving mother-in-law house of 40 years is not as easy as we thought. Add winter driving over strawberry in snow not much fun ether.

Hey Greg, sorry about the movin project. I did get the green light to go fishing once Paul and Andrew are up. If you get a chance by new year run up we'll give'em a try. Pretty sure at least Mantua will be a go by then. Thinking Hyrum will probably be ok by then too. Later J
