I was at Scofield yesterday morning and I fished in the arm of the lake leading to the dam. At about noon a guy unloaded a snowmobile on the point south of the State Park and drove up the bay toward the dam. He didn't seem to have any issues. There is now about 10 inches of snow on the ice. The ice was about 8 inches thick where I was fishing near the buoy line.

I don't know what the ice conditions are at other locations around the lake. There were some thin spots prior to the last snowfall, so the snow may have insulated those spots. I would be very careful if you plan to venture where there are no previous tracks in the snow.

On the fishing side of the day, the chub fest continues! I wasn't targeting chubs and I still caught 14 in three hours of fishing. I was using a jig tipped with chub meat and it was a larger presentation than I use if targeting the chubs. I also caught 6 cutthroats but they were all small and very skinny.

Yeah we had the same experience last week. 46 Chubs and 5 dinky, sickly, Sad looking cuts - all about 8" long... Sad stuff. We were there for about 6 hours though. Sounds like you and I were actually fishing in a very similar spot. We're going to go again tomorrow, mostly because we don't know anywhere else with safe ice and it's still fun to catch fish, even if it is a pile of those pesky chubs.

As for the question about snow machines....
The DNR guy was riding a four wheeler all around the dam arm and there were some snow mobiles on the north end as we were driving in.

I'm headed up there tomorrow morning to take the 8 and 4 year old boys fishing. Undecided about taking the 4wheeler now. Certainly wasn't going to make a run for the island, but did think about taking it to get around in the limited time we will have.

We've only been to Scofield only once before, last year near the Madison boat ramp. Lets just say the trip was more about family time than catching fish.

Anyone willing to share some advice as to what should I be targeting as far as depth? Near rocky shoreline? Or are the chub wandering all over across the dam arm? The boys will be happy with chub, and I can use the bait.

Edit: Thanks for the report Prof. Feel a bit more comfortable about taking the 4wheeler now.

I was there last week riding my sled all over the dam arm. I saw plenty of wheelers riding around and even towing kids in a sled. The dam arm is surely safe but i didnt go past the buoys. I saw people fishing the main lake but no machines. I'm sure its fine by now but of course i would always drill test first

ATV's were on Huntington last Saturday. You should be fine with a sled too.

Thanks for all the info. as far as what to use to catch fish for the boys use a small jig and peace of worm to catch the chub , and chub meat to catch the bigger fish.fish about 10 ft. depth.

Try fishing after dark for bigger trout. The chubs don't have very good eyesite and they hide at night... I think your odds of getting a nice tiger go up a lot after dark.

Good luck to all!
