Hit the big blue yesterday. Met up with a friend who drove down from Ammon, Idaho to spend the day in retirement. Roads were clean up thru Logan Canyon. Temps were at 18 when first arrived prior to sunrise. There was a heavy fog bank on the north & east side but as big red was getting higher the bank completely engulfed us on the west side. As we fished the Rockpile area the fog eventually cleared. Wind was not a factor at all and other than state park marina there was no sign of lake icing. It turned into a beautiful day. Ran into BearLakeFishGuy as he was having a great day catching. Sometimes one can think while fishing Bear a 1 fish catch is a good day and go home satisfied. We ended up catching 9 cutty's to the boat and lost another 2. There was only 2 keepers out of the bunch. Caught a nice fatty 10lb native as shown in 2nd pic.

Sounds like you had a good outing. Did you troll all of the time? Sure hope the roads don't get too slick, because I want to get up there several more times. Ice fishing can wait for awhile.

It was a good outing, I enjoy this time of year boating the Bear for some good fishing. It won't be long before the fish start gorging themselves on cisco and then the bite is off for a while. Road conditions were really good considering the snow fall that is up there now. But knowing when to take the risk is judgment call. I like waiting at least 2-3days after a storm has past thru to make sure DOT has done their thing.

Hey that is sure a pretty Cutt, lots of fun to catch nice fish like that one.... Think I'll keep playing on the soft water as well... Somehow those dinky slimers through the ice don't compare to a fish like you caught... Nice report.... Any idea if they were still catching whitefish? I ran out of smoked whitefish already I need a new fix.... Thanks and Later J

We didn't hear of any whitefish in any ones catches. Love catching cutty's and this time of year they tend to give a good head shake or 2 while on the reel in. We didn't reel in any slugs. SRG lures working well for us. I was fishing with the maker of these lures trying out his Bear L specials. ![[Image: bobwink.gif]](http://www.bigfishtackle.com/images/gforum/bobwink.gif)

Its hard to beat the cutts for size right now, even if their fight was a little sub par. Not familiar with the SRG lures are they in Sportsman's? I found the RMT lures were working well last week, put a little Cisco tail on and it didn't take long to get a hit. Wish I had more time to get back after them again. Later J

Hey that's srglures.com. SRG.com is stirling rice group. Lures look good but they are pretty spendy for what they are. Guess I'd have to see them work better than what I've got before I'd spend $10 a piece. But then again I'm tired of buying tackle I never use. I might get one in Cisco and try it head to head against my squid to see which one is better but I'll contain myself from buying five or six at a time. Can you tell I've been looking at my blown budget? Thanks for the tip. J

My mistake on the website, I edited it for correction. I have fished with this style of lure prior to SRG existence. Those who have fished with me have purchased the Lyman brand lures and have a good arsenal of the lure itself with a good success rate. Lyman is made BC, Canada. Their prices have soared since the mom & pop operation sold out and shipping costs have gotten high vs. how many to purchase. I started playing with carvings of this style and sent blanks on to the owner of SRG prior to it becoming SRG. From there it evolved into more than just a hobby, and that's mentioning what it takes to start up a business. It takes a lot to put quality into a lure using a wood sealer, paint, glow paint(try pricing that), paint sealer and hardware. While Lyman has had good products in the past, I'm seeing some of their lures beginning to look like seconds today. Those of us who fish with this lure style know the success rate but we also know that its not just a lure that takes up space and doesn't get used. Most of us know that a lake can change from one day to the next with lures or even get the impression the fish have lockjaw. What's nice about any type of lure is if its one of those unproductive sitting in your box, try repainting it to a color scheme that will work.

I'm sure it's pretty spendy to set up a production line with a limited product line, didn't mean to be negative... Mostly just getting after me for my usual approach of buying five or six new lures before I even try one... Had a buddy tell me about the greatest lure ever, it's sort of potato chip shaped and so I bought a bunch of different colors and I pulled them quite a bit and I think I've only caught one fish on them... Did sort of the same thing on cranks for Willard and bought a bunch before I knew which ones would work for me, so just wanting to avoid my past over indulgences.... What is the best pattern of the SRG's for Bear Lake? I know day to day things change, but which one would you recommend to try first? Thanks J

You should see my tackle boxes/bags. Lots of gear that I don't know when it will get used.

I'm guilty of being a tackle whore myself. I never pass up a good lure and always willing to collect my share of rods & reels too. [bobsurprised]
