Perchfest - Secret Spot!
#1
Sort of depressing reading all these negative perch reports, particularly when I'm just tearing 'em up......and I didn't even have to travel that far. Not about to give you guys any GPS waypoints, but I will divulge that it's close to home, close to shore and a short walk. Had to get permission from the owner to enter private drive, but quiet & peaceful, and no one around to move in on you when you start yanking 'em. Guard dog keeps close watch. No slush, safe ice --- even a ladder close by if you happened to take a swim. Comfortable, too, like being in your own backyard. And the fishing? Well, take a look for yourselves.......

Did you have to buy a new pool cover when you drilled through it?

Don't get too excited. The state issued a consumption advisory for the fish that come from that spot. They have high levels of chlorine and are not safe to eat.

[#0000FF]Did you really save and freeze all three of the perch you caught last year just to make this silly post?

I skipped the perch fishing at PV last year. Does anyone know where we are on the "perchcycle"?
There seem to be a few years of dinks before they bulk up for a year or so, then back to dinks.
I can't remember ever catching a perch over 10" out of PV.

[cool] Hmmm..., that is a good question. I only went to P.V. Once or twice last year, but I caught more crappie than perch. I'm going to have to defer that question to someone who knows more about that than myself, like Tubedude for example. ..

[#484848]Is this one of those landowner things, where you have to sign the roster to get in?[/#484848]

[#0000FF]Perchcycle? Is that another way of saying frozen perch?

Both perch and crappies are subject to population and growth cycles...mostly dependent upon years of higher water levels at spawn time. Both depend on having flooded shoreline brush and underwater vegetation upon which to lay eggs...and provide shelter for the newly hatched fry.

According to my logs, the winters of 2010 and 2011 were both good for both size and numbers on both perch and crappies. Got respectable numbers of perch to 10 inches...not much beyond that. And the crappies were coming through the ice up to 15 inches. Good stuff.

Those larger fish got off good spawns during the high water springs of those years and since then we have seen gradually growing large numbers of young fish. However, the perch seem to have faded out the last couple of years and we went from catching tons of 6-8 inch stunted perch to almost nothing...open water or under the ice. The crappies have hung in there and have been growing about an inch or two a year...topping out now at just over 10 inches. But unless they get off a massive spawn this spring...to provide food for the adults to grow on...the remaining crappies will likely not grow too much bigger before reaching the end of their life cycle.

There are still perch showing up here and there...in low numbers...with few over about 8 inches. They are fully adult and will likely spawn this spring if the water comes up well. And it doesn't take too many successfully spawning females to put a lot of new recruits back into the system. Only problem is that it takes longer to grow them to any size in Pineview and there is a lot of competition for available food.

Too early to tell yet, but my prediction is a great year for crappies through the ice...averaging around 10 inches. Those were the 8 inchers last year and the 6 inchers the year before. Lots of them. Too many. It would pay to keep a limit whenever you can. That might help the survivors gain a bit more weight before their final year in the lake.

Perch? There will be a few anglers who find stray schools and put more than a half dozen on the ice on any given trip. But don't look for the days of a couple of years ago when you could catch a hundred or more dinks per trip. The ones you catch will not likely even come close to the 10 inch mark.

I looked back through my Pineview picture files and I have quite a few pictures of healthy 10 inch perch from a few years ago. But all the pics since then are usually of much smaller fish.

Thanks TubeDude. Your info is thorough as always. Not what I was hoping to hear but it does answer the question I asked.
I wanted to find a local water where I can take a herd of kids and catch perch all day. Sounds like I might still be ok with PV if I target crappie instead.

[#FF0000]"I wanted to find a local water where I can take a herd of kids and catch perch all day."

[#0000FF]Let me know if you find such a spot. I'm a self-admitted perchaholic myself. Reviewing my past best perch spots is dismal. Just about every place I have ever done well for perch has not been worth a hoot for the past few years. Starting with the glory days of Yuba, working through the former abundance of Deer Creek...and Jordanelle...and Rockport...and Echo...and Starvation...and Pineview. None are currently worth the effort. There is hope for a couple...within the next few years. But us oldsters would rather it be sooner than later. Know what I mean.

Guess I better cozy up to Perchinski and see if I can get a day permit to fish his spot.
