Gulp waxies
#1
Anyone tried the Gulp waxies and maggots for ice fishing and if you have, how did they work?

I just bought two packages of gulp waxies and one jar of gulp maggots from sportsman's warehouse. Curios if I made a dumb financial decision?

Mike, I've been going to try them myself... I love them trolling on my squid hooks, but I haven't tried them through the ice before, so I guess we'll both be doing some learning... I plan on having real ones and try side by side with the gulps and see which works best... It would sure be easier to just use gulps if they work as well... Good question... J

I haven't tried the Gulp waxies but I have been using Gulp maggots for years and it is hard to believe there could be a huge difference in the two, other than size. The maggots work great for kokes and trout, not as good for the warm water fish, IMO.

I have been using the Gulp maggots off and on for a few years, it has been hit and miss with me. I will usually start out with the real thing and then if nothing happens, I will try these. I believe that the fish are sometimes very finicky, other times they don't care and take whatever is offered. I do like the different colors offered in the Gulp maggot.
I also have impaled some Gulp night crawler bait on a hook, same thing, hit or miss. I haven't ever done a side by side comparison, great idea, I just might have to do that.

I don't think one can go wrong with many options, it just takes longer to go through them all.

Thanks for the opinions guys, I guess I'll just have to go find out for myself. I plan on hitting Montpelier Reservoir next week for perch and kokes, so I will be able to run 5 different poles and try various baits out against each other.
I'm also planning on building a half dozen jawjacker knock-offs and try those out too. Between the Gulp baits and homemade jawjackers I may be setting my self up for a world class skunking, but then again.......[Wink]

I've had a bottle of the maggots that has been from here to Alabama. They work on Crappie in some places, here not so much. Rainbows and cutts while ice fishing last year at the berry they worked good. When the perch at Fish Lake keep stealing bait the maggots stay on the hook great.
It's just like any other lure. Right place, right time.

I had some luck with the white Gulp! Alive Maggots on UL for white bass last winter. Just used them to tip an orange ice fly or a chartreuese leadhead.

I know someone who did well at Pine View for crappie, tipping jigs with pink Gulp maggots.

From my experience it seems like all baits have their moments. Last weekend we were catching bluegill, trout and bass like crazy using night crawlers and meal worms but it got frustrating having to rebait so often. So I pulled out the Gulp Alive Waxies and continued to hammer them but with far less bait replacement. Some days the fish are more specific in their preferences so it's nice to have options. I always have the Gulp along just in case I run out of other bait options. I like to have crawlers, waxies, spikes (when I can find them), mealies and carp available too. I've run into plenty of situations when one or the other didn't work so well.

I have had some fair success just getting a bottle of the gulp refill stuff and soaking my tube jigs or ice flies or whatever in them. I am no expert though.
