Fish tacos?
#1
My wife tried some fish tacos in Mexico on a cruise we took in December. Ever since then she has talked about how those tacos were so good and super fresh (we caught the fish earlier that day on the ocean). I know I have read people here talk about fish tacos, but I don't know what type of fish make the best ones. So if I am interested in some delicious fish tacos, what type of fish should I use? Where is a good lake to target the fish? And do you have an amazing recipe for cooking them?

Oh man can I relate!! My wife and I love some good fish tacos! As far as what lake to catch fish in that will give you a good protein, I guess I would say F.G. or the Berry so you can have salmon. Other than that, just run to a fish market and grab some halibut, tilapia, cod or salmon. After that, it is only going to be as good as the seasoning you put on them and the sauce/topping that go with it. Here is a little recipe that I like to use anytime we do fish tacos. With fish tacos, sometimes less is more so experiment with this and see what you like best. I like to have some heat to mine so add a few items to give it a kick.

Good Luck!

I threw this together a couple years ago using just what I had on hand at the time, and it was awesome. Pan fried Largemouth bass seasoned with pepper and dill, arugula, with a little sriracha. Throw that in a white flour tortilla. So good.

Do you know or have an idea what the tacos you had were made from? That might be a good place to start. Obviously if it was mahi or some saltwater fish you're not going to catch it here but if it was a firm white meat perch or walleye would be a good fish to make into tacos close to what you may havve had.

I beer battered and fried some crappie from Pineview last year that turned out excellent, again depending on how the fish tacos you had were cooked (fried, grilled, poached, broiled...) I'm sure you could replicate it.

I know I might get strung up by my toes for this but I don't care for trout in tacos, especially fried but that's just my two cents.

Best fish to use is any type of white meat (perch, crappie, white bass, any bass, walleye, etc). Even though I'm not a alcohol drinker there's nothing like beer batter fish tacos. My entire wife's family, who gag's at the sight and smell of fish, line up out to the street when I'm cooking beer battered fish tacos for dinner.

A few nights ago I fried up some white bass fillets in a pan with olive oil. Just tossed them around in a ziploc bag with some flour and season salt and fried them in the oil. Again, my wife ate half the plate but she "hates fish."

So to answer your question. Panfish is the answer and tons of Lakes/Reservoirs around the State provide great fishing depending on your location. I'll look for my beer batter recipe that one of my subscribers sent me and get back to you.

I don't know what type of fish we caught. I will attached pictures, maybe someone better knowledgable with salt water fish will know. I know some of the ones we caught they said were good eating and others were not. We took them to a small family restaurant and they battered the fish and fried it up for us. Fresh tortilla and fresh fixings on top of that. It was delicious. I want to try to replicate it for my wife but I never knew what type of fish is best for tacos. It sounds like bass or perch are good. I consider myself a learner fisherman. I still have lots to learn. I can hold my own going after trout at the berry or on a river, but I am clueless with bass, wiper, perch and such. Sadly I live within 10 minutes of Utah lake but have never tried to fish it.

Dude, I lived in San Diego for 10 years and fished about every day I was there! Most of the year we had a decent supply of halibut, rock & long for, or various saltwater bass. A lot of the time these ended up in different homemade tacos! The key here, these are all real "meaty" (not flaky) white meat fish. You can batter and deep fry them or our favorite super easy way... Dice the boneless skinless fillets and cook them like chicken tacos with a simple McCormick taco seasoning packet! Can't be easier than following the directions on the packet! Even my wife's family say they are the best fish tacos they have ever had! (And they are from mexico)
Your best freshwater alternative here would be white bass, striper, or wiper... Walleye are good too, but they flake apart a bit. I guess you could use catfish, but I only eat cats Cajun style! lol

In my family we like to make fish tacos with wipers, crappie, or perch, I'm sure other fish are good as well but we like those.

Perch or Crappie. These are crappie

Breaded in crushed Ritz crackers and corn meal (to your liking) and season salt to taste.

We like cabbage, cilantro, cheese, some lime juice , and the Cafe Rio cilantro Lime ranch sauce. You can either buy it from them or find a good imitation off the Internet.

Corn tortillas or homemade flour tortillas are my favorite!
