Nils auger question
#1
Hey all, I got a new 6 inch Nils auger from cabelas.com. It came in a generic box and appears to be used. My question is do they have to test these before shipping out? Online it did not say anything about being a used or reconditioned item. Most of the marks are cosmetic so I guess if it drills holes Im good but you would think from cabelas it would be a new item in new packaging. I can post up pics if needed.
Thanks

I bought the same auger from cabelas also, the box was generic but no scratches or cosmetic damages to the one I got. I love the auger, word of caution the cutting head is dangerous I barley grazed the blade and opened up my finger.

I bought my Nils auger from Cabelas (in store). I can't remember what container, if any, that it came in, but it looked new with a good blue paint job on the body and red on the cutting head except for the knife edges, and the blade was nice and shiny.

I am a little paranoid about these things, but if there is any question, I would take it back and get an exchange. The blade head has to be just as designed and not knocked around or bent, to cut effectively. You are paying a lot to get a new good cutting auger. I would want to make sure there is no problem.

My two cents. Good Luck!

The cutting head on my first nils auger seemed to be roughly finished (purchased from fish USA). The blue looked nice but the red end had painted weld spots, was not finished like I would have expected for a Mercedes auger. It cut fine for the first 12 holes then suddenly would not cut worth a dime. Blades felt sharp as a razor. Contacted Nils, they blamed it on dirty ice. I saved ice shavings, melted them and couldn't see any dirt. Fish USA sent me a new cutting head. It has worked awesome. I also have a 6" and it is like a dream! Treat the auger like a princess. NEVER leave the blade protector off. NEVER tap it on the ice to get frozen ice off it. NEVER pull it out of the hole roughly. I won't even let someone else cut a hole with it! I haven't had a problem for the last 2 years! I do not feel they are as durable as a strikemaster Lazer but they sure cut like a hot knife in butter! I can cut 1"/second! Can dig 2-3 holes (with the 8" even) to one on a power auger! Treat it nice and you'll love it!

Thanks everyone, I called cabelas and they said I can try it out sat and if not satisfied I can return it. Problem is I think they are out of them for the season. I would assume they will get more next year. Just might have to use my old one a few more times if it doesn't work out.
