Finally have time to get back to big blue in the morning. What do I take, ice gear or open water? I have been hearing ice off Cisco beach for a little ways and ice at the pump house and weed beds, is that still true tonight as the sun went down? I know morning could be a different story. Also I'm in a dilemma dip net or snag Cisco? Seems like dipping is over so fast on good days that it's hardly worth the drive, but snagging may leave you empty handed. Pretty sure I'll try some big fish after the bait fest but lack of ice might hamper that. Thanks for your input. J

You need to bring some gear for ice fishing. There is still some open water, but not accessible from shore. If you want to just net cisco then that's fine. You can snap them pretty much anywhere off the bottom though. Off of the east or west side of Bear Lake there are lots of places such as Cisco Beach, first and second points, pumphouse, and west of Gus Riches. Cisco are right on the bottom. So jig a heavy spoon or jig, at least 1/2 ounce. Make sure you're jigging on the bottom. Trout will be full of cisco by now so might want to fish out in deeper water for them. Big 4 inches tube jigs work well with worm or cisco.

So how far out on the ice can you fish before only being on a couple inches of ice?

We fished cisco beach today, I would say there was only four inches there. Ice looks pretty schety the ferther out you go. I don't think a life jacket would be out of the question if your getting brave. Did look a little more solid by the pumphouse though.
