Fish Lake Tournament
#1
Was told by the marina that there has been over 1200 people sign up for the tournament. Any way you look at it, that's less than last years tournament (still a lot). I hope with this many people we all don't forget to keep it fun, and still be civil with others. Still should be fun. I hope to catch a tagged fish like the rest of you. Hope to meet a few forum members also. See you all down there, travel safe. It sounds like we might get some weather Saturday.

Yeah I think they lost a couple numbers with not having it as a team event, but that's beside the point. Was at Joe's Bush with all the crowds and caught some perch and trout. I think it will be a fun event. Bring my boy so hopefully he can get a youth prize. There were a ton of sleds and ATVs running around. I just hope everyone stays safe and considerate of others. I know the valley's call for rain/snow. Hope it is only snow. Rain would be miserable.

If you see a big group with kids of all ages (bringing my 7 month old boy, gotta start 'em right!) with a 6x12' red eskimo stop by! I'm really looking for to this, should be a blast!

I'm fairly new to ice fishing, and I have a couple etiquette questions. What are your thoughts on building a campfire on the ice?

and I have been looking at the ice thickness reports and it appears totally safe for me to drive my jeep out on the ice, with the little kids (3yrs and 7 months) I know my wife would feel better having it out there. I haven't seen people doing this here in Utah, is there a reason why?

Thanks!

I took my truck, and my brother-in-law took a rented Ford Astro van out on Scofield once. People scattered like they were expecting an apocalypse. Mostly it's a matter of access and changing conditions. It's one thing if you sink an old snowmobile, quite another if you lose the family vehicle to Davy Jones' locker.

I fished Joes Bush Saturday and it was 12+ inches thick. If you plan on driving out your jeep, make sure you use the boat ramp, or they will site you for driving off road to the ice. I seen this happen at the berry several years go. It cost the driver of the truck $400 dollars. Most of us have atvs, Utvs and snowmobiles. If you loose one of them through the ice, You still have a ride home. That's why you don't see the vehicles on the ice here. I'm sure if you need transportation out on to the ice for the little ones, there are plenty of fellow fishermen that would help with that.

Per this article on KSL looks like for this tournament they will not be allowing ATVs or Sleds...so just in case you are going to take one.

"quote: ATVs and snowmobiles will not be allowed at this event in order to alleviate congested parking."

Many places limit where campfires can be built and I believe Fish Lake is one of those places.

Probably for two reasons. One is we have limited experience with vehicles (other than snowmobiles and four wheels on the ice) and secondly, we have reservoirs here and back east they more commonly have lakes. The difference between the two is the water stays a constant level in lakes and is often filling in the winter time on reservoirs. Rising water can make the ice at the shoreline much thinner and one can go through the ice near the shoreline, when the ice on the reservoir itself is much thicker.

Does anybody know if this is for sure the case? The tournament rules only say that they are not recommended. I'm planning on going and taking my ATV, but just in the back of my truck, no trailer.

From the UDWR's own news article on the subject:

Quote:Among the items to leave at home are all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. "Heavy snowfall has restricted parking access at the lake," she says. "For that reason, we're asking you to leave your ATVs and snowmobiles at home. The trailers will take up more parking space, which is already scarce."

The UDWR site doesn't say they're not allowing them. It says they're asking you to leave them home. And specifically mentions trailers taking up parking space. Not that unloading and loading a machine from the bed of a pickup truck won't take up space in a crowded parking area.

KSL is notorious for getting things wrong.... like pictures of the wrong species of game animal for their stories. Elk when they're talking about a moose.... Bighorn Sheep when they mention Mountain Goats... etc.

Didn't know i was shootin'. [crazy] Just pointing out what the UDWR had to say about the issue. They're not perfect either, but it is their show on Saturday.

We booked our cabin the next day they announced the tournament so since we can't have trailers at the cabin it is either we drop our trailer off in one of the parking lots and leave the truck at the cabin and ride snowmobiles to go back and forth from the lake like it says in the cabin contracts or park 4 trucks in the parking lot for the tournament and take up more space.. We have no choice but to leave just the trailer in the parking, no difference than one truck, that is better courtesy than the trucks and we will be there LA day before the tournament and park the trailer as far back as possible
.. They should've said something about it when the tournament rules were posted..

You can catch tasty yellow perch, enjoy free hot chocolate and win prizes at the second Fish Lake Perch Tournament. In addition to 10 firearms, Sportsmen for Fish & Wildlife is donating $3,500 in additional prizes. Ten fish will be tagged with numbers that will win you a firearm, but the fish with the firearm-winning tags must be caught on the day of the tournament — Jan. 30 — in order to win.

They put out the news release on the 15th. First mention of the tournament on this site that I can find is from the 12th.

It says they are discouraging people from bringing them but says nothing about not allowing them. Also in Hadley's latest post about signing up for the tourny it says they will have a certain spot plowed for a limited amount of atv/snowmobile trailers to park.

Just a word of caution to those of you who are taking little kids. Although a 6 or 8 inch hole in the ice does not look very dangerous to a 8-10 yr. old, it can be deadly for kids up to 6 yrs old and younger. a 3yr old will slide down a 6 inch whole so fast it will make your head swim, not funny. If you are going to have young ones out there, play it safe and tie a rope on them, don't leave them alone, unsupervised, and have a place they can stay warm and out of the wind. Have fun but use common sense.

PS: Some fisherman have 10inch augers, which can swallow a 10 to 12 yr old, so be forewarned and have SAFE fun.

An 18 inch hole is allowed at Fish Lake. Not just trying to be nitpicky, 18 inches is enough for me to go through if I didn't put my arms out in time.

Sorry for the late reply everyone, I've been up at the lake tagging perch for the last few days.

We are discouraging ATVS and snowmobiles simply for the complication of parking trailers. If you can put it in the back of your truck, then that is fine. The Doctor Creek campground and Mallard Bay overflow are being designated as trailer parking - including camp trailers and ATV trailers. That space is limited.

There should be an email going out today to all those who registered online that will outline some of these details. It may also have more info on additional trailer parking that I am not aware of.
