I know, I know it's only January 27th, but hey what can I say? I walked out of my hotel today and it was a nice Val y 43 degrees. The sun felt warm, I saw a couple of RV's out running around and it got me thinking. I know a dangerous occupation in itself. I started thinking about what I need to do to get ready for the warmer weather. A time line sort of thing.
I need to do the following:
Desinterize the trailer (March)
Pull out my toon trailer, make any repairs
Pull the toon out, make repairs if any
Check over my fishing gear, change line out
Purchase new gear (I need some saltwater stuff)
Renew my snail paper (invasive species paper)-did this yesterday.
Pull the boat out and prep it
So what do you guys do to prepare for the coming season? And when do you start?

I was on Utah Lake in my tube last year on January 31st.
Don't have a whole lot to get ready. Just need to put my reels back on my long rods, and change the line. Mix up my tackle boxes a little bit.
Soft water can't come soon enough for me.

Yeah I noticed there is a storm coming this weekend. I am all for the warmer weather but since we need the water I can deal with the snow and cooler temps. I just got my new saltwater catalog from cabellas the other day so I have plenty of reading material.[ ]

I'm hoping the ice goes away soon too... I used to enjoy ice fishing a lot more when I was younger... now it seems like a lot of work and the cold gets old.
I guess over the years too I've changed tactics and try to cover as much water as possible... I like making long casts and working large areas quickly. Ice fishing it seems like it is really hard to cover lots of water... gotta walk all over, drill all over, and even then you are only fishing in 1 spot at a time, an area the size of an 8" hole.

I decided to not put the plastic on my boat this year and stay ready. Plan on going to Bear Lake next weekend. My buddy got a huge Laker last weekend. I am not much of an ice guy either, but i am going next week. It has been a real pain in the butt keeping the snow off of it though. I don't want the cover to stretch out too much. I've always wanted to try Bear Lake around the Cisco run. Let's hope for a lot of snow and an early long spring!

I have a full day booked on a private boat next Wednesday out of Waikiki. I will do my best to bring back some spring. We can have rain in the valleys and snow in the hills it does not have to be cold. Just saying Mom Nature.

I am ready for spring! I have been doing some ice fishing but I am waiting for warmer weather and open water. Last year I was able to get my tune on Grantsville the first part of February. I think is going to be March this year.

Spring prep for me is easy because I don't have a boat, just me waders and boots. I organize my fly box, keep my reels clean, and make sure my rods are in a spot they won't break for a few weeks.
I like to check up on last years reports, look at maps, and stare intently at my fly rods, imagining that elusive trophy spring time buck consuming my fly.
Just a lot of reading mostly.

So I'm sittin' by a 6 inch hole
with a 3 foot pole,
...but sometimes I get to thinkin',
dreaming of that 30 foot cast.....
Whoops -- that's "Ice Fish Baby" You guys all heard that one by now I imagine...but if not, just youtube Ice fish Baby...you'll love it and want to get out on the ice again...I love getting my boat out on the Gorge, or Rockport, or Lost Creek, or E. Canyon, for the trolling, or hiking around by some of the High Uinta's lakes...just not in the mood yet, as I really have fun on the ice...another month I'll start dreaming...

I've started to get ready. Built a new rod holder for my tube. Now just need to attach a bag. Changed out some old line and am searching for a new life vest and rubber net.

I replace all the line in all my reels. Go thru my tackle boxes, clean them out, replace hooks and weights that were donated to the bottom of whatever body of water, check all my favorite lures for Willard Bay, replace hooks on them if needed, make sure the eyelet is secure, replace ones that have been badly beaten, and buy spares of the ones that worked the best (for me) last season.
Pull the boat out of it's plastic and canvas cocoon, get the battery and gas tank put back in. Clean out any leave or whatever that may have gotten down in the bilge, make sure the plug is still there and the rubber isn't dried out.
Soon as the water is free of ice at Willard, get up to one of the marinas early one morning, get the stern in the water far enough to crank the motor, get the oil and lower end lube good and warmed up, then pull up off the ramp and change both fluids. Always drain the old oil and lube into a drip pan with a cap, then turn it in to one of the auto parts stores that takes old oil.
Then about every 2 years, I put the boat back in the water, tie it up good, and go check out all the bunks and bolts etc on the trailer. Usually replace the bunks and re-carpet every other year. Then if I feel like it (and I almost always do) I get the Tin-Can out on the water for it's maiden "Skunking" for that season. Hopefully to get it over and out of the way early. [:/]
Might be a bit side tracked this season though. Been working on my house since just after Christmas. Getting ready to list it for sale this spring or summer.
Hey, TD, My son says he met up with you at Wal-Mart awhile back. He works in the Electronics dept at the one in N. Ogden.
Anyway, I'm ready for some warmer weather for sure. Think we got enough snow pack in the mtns? Sure hope so. Better than last years anyway.
