Thoughts on Bear Lake this week
#1
I want to get another big blue trip in before open water and I'm hoping to do it tomorrow. Couple questions and I know you may not want to comment on the full forum, so PM's are fine. First, is the rock pile iced over yet? And is it safe ice to fish there? Second, does anyone else fish the whitefish this time of year and which areas are best? I got into them in shallow water as a kid so you could watch them take your offerings and I've always loved that kind of fishing. Lastly what area is best to start for trout? Thanks all. Later J

Read the fishing report on: http://fishingbearlake.com

White fish can readily be caught right on the rock pile, but your offering has to be right on the bottom (they are sucking cisco eggs off of the rocks). If you are more than an inch or so off of the bottom you won't catch them.

Some macks and cutts are caught right on the rock pile, but I have had better luck moving a little deeper.

Thanks Kent, do you know how deep it is off the main rock pile this year? Been several years since I fished that area and it seems like it was fairly deep other times I ice fished it (like around 60')... Always seems like that area makes me pucker as I try to get out there and cross cracks and seams in the ice.... Not sure I'm gutzy enough to try it that early in the ice safe thickness...

What do you catch the whitefish with now? Same thing as trout, small castmasters or do you use a egg pattern fly? I know cisco eggs are tiny compared to egg flies so I guess that's a dumb question, but wondered if a small waxie or salmon egg would pick up a few whitefish??? Guess that's something to try but not waste too much time with... Thanks for the tips... J

Got to fish when you can, seems like if you wait for the stars to align a honey doo will come up at the same time... Thanks for the report... J

I haven't been to the rock pile this year, so perhaps someone with more current knowledge can answer. Tipping a small lure or tube jig with a piece of crawler, meal worm, wax worm or salmon egg should catch some white fish.
