Bear Lake: Caught Fish Lost Rod
#1
Remo and I met up for a "So foggy we missed the Brigham City exit" drive to Bear Lake. He's a thoroughly nice guy, BTW.

Inversion and fog almost the whole time, except for an hour or so just after noon. The lake was having "icequakes" that we could feel rolling under us.

Remo caught several bragging fish the photos of which I'm sure he'll post later. I managed one nice goes-back cutt to avoid the skunk. We tried various depths until we finally set up right outside the marina mouth, and that's where we had all our action.

On the way out, this old man got quite huffy and puffy and somewhere along the north side of the marina, my new ice rod must have bounced out of my sled. Didn't notice until it was far too late to go back for it.

If anyone finds a rod near the marina, PM me and I'll describe it.

Had a great day with Rocky today, the weather at Bear Lake was incredible, was so nice to get out of this inversion and see some sun. After punching holes and fishing in 35-70' feet of water and having plenty of tight lipped fish swim by we ended up in 17 FOW just out of the marina, I also switched to a smaller jig (Pearl tipped with sucker meat). 1st drop hooked a nice Mac that shook loose at the hole, had a lot of bites and then hooked a decent Mac that made it to the ice, a few more bites and a small Cutt' came to visit, another drop and a big ol' Cutt came to play. Made my day!

Catching was a bit slow, saw lots of fish though, company was great and so was the weather, glad I went and hope to get back before it melts.

Very nice you two, glad you got some tugs. Sounded like all trout for you today, not a bad thing but unexpected since the whitefish have been the more active participants. Fun to catch nice fish, way to go. Later J

[#0000FF]Glad you got on Big (hard) Blue. Sorry for the lost rod and the near miss skunk. Always gotta be a bit of drama/tragedy to make a trip complete.

Been reading your books while travelling. Great stuff. I've met Remo a couple of times before. Kinda imagine him as "Joe"...the right seater. Good guy.

Remo as Joe? Interesting. Joe was a bit more - how shall I say this? Neanderthal. On the outside, anyway. Certainly had more hair!

I fretted about that rod all night. Bought it the day before, just for that trip. Looks like that's how it ended up, too. Oh well...

Well done both of you. Who would have ever thunk it that you would find the willing cutts and macks in 17 FOW?

I can certainly relate to your pain. The last, and come to think of it, the only rod that I have ever lost I lost at Bear Lake last year. It flew out of the back of my boat somewhere between the east and west side. Of course, it had one of my nicest reels on it and the rod was one of my favorites. I still haven't gotten over losing mine, so you might have a few more months of grief in you.[frown]

Macks can be caught in numbers in the shallows any day. Just not as frequent to see or catch bigger ones at shallower depths. Most the mack on the lake I fish in N.W. Wyoming are caught in less than 25 f.o.w. I might see some of you down that way this weekend. Going to make the drive from Alpine Wy. and stay by a place near the State Marina and try our luck Saturday morning. I will be with my wife and will be wearing gray wool pants and a blue Carhartt coat. Feel free to say hello! Would like to share some stories with you!!! Question for all the locals and guys from Logan and SLC area. Is Bear lake a recipricol lake? I have a year Idaho License or will I need to purchase a day Utah license?

If you happen to see a rod tip sticking out of the snow near the NW corner of the marina dike...

I'll keep an eye out for it! Maybe I'll catch a nice mack with it and take a photo for you before I return it.[Wink]
