My friend and I made a trip to Fishlake on Monday. It was sure a fine day for fishing. We signed in at the Lakeside store on the off chance we caught a tagged perch and then parked across the road at the marina. We fished in 15-18 FOW and had a lot of fun. Ended the day with 89 perch, 14 rainbows and 2 splake. Kept the perch and one bow and splake that were 14 inches for my Dad. Saw quite a few others out fishing, but it was far from being crowded.
If you have ever been to Fishlake, then you have probably experienced the subtle and gentle breezes that occasionally flutter along the ice carrying small children, snowmobiles and the odd Texan or Canadian depending on which direction it is coming from.[
] It has definitely been worse on my trips up there, but it sure kept us on our toes yesterday. It would come from the north and then west and then south and then from the east. A few times it was blowing straight down and once I had to stand on top of my hole to keep the fish from shooting into the air like a warped slot machine! We didn't even attempt to set up our tent and watched some folks without anchors suddenly become adapt at hang gliding. 2 kids were chasing a wayward coat and gloves, when their own plastic sled kiboshed them neater than a 7-10 split at the bowling alley. Thankfully they weren't hurt other than their pride.[
] We never found a tagged perch but the tags may have blown off.[cool]
Fishlake is a fun lake and I love going down as many times as I can in an ice season. But sometimes it can get a tad breezy. But don't let that stop ya from having a blast catching perch. The fishing was best for us from 9 til 1130 in the morning. Then it sloped off some til we left at 3. Interestingly enough to me, all the perch were tight to the bottom all morning but around 1, I started seeing fish cruising at 10 feet on the finder. I came up to that depth and had a blast catching perch for an hour til they disappeared. We didn't target trout and the ones we did catch, hit our perch rigs at perch depths. Wax & meal worms on little ratfinkies below a Swedish pimple worked swell. Even caught a few on shrimp. Good luck to ya!
