Otter Creek Update?
#1
Thinking about heading down to Otter Creek tomorrow. Anyone have an update on fishing and ice conditions?

Here's the quote from the Otter Creek State Park site -
Ice Thickness: 16 Inches. Lake ice is NEVER safe. Use common sense when going out on ice.
Other Information: We are currently working on a park upgrade to bring electrical hookups to all of our beach sites (1-15). We anticipate having this upgrade done before May of 2016. All campground water has been shut off and the fish cleaning station is closed for the winter.
Last Updated: 1-5-2016

You'd think since the park ranger lives across the street from the entrance, he'd be able to update the info more often than once every 6-8 weeks. I've written to the Park Dept. asking them to update their sites more often but got no response and apparently no action. Everyone should send them off an email regarding this lack of cooperation.

I've sent E-mails to State Parks about the lack of timely reports for Millsite & Huntington and never received anything back. They must take the winter off. The only State Park that does a good job on keeping up to date on the fishing conditions is Starvation.

The State Park conditions report is like any other report, unless it's kept up to date it's worthless.[:/]

Four of us went Monday and had to use a plank to get onto the ice. The ice around the edge wasn't bad when we got there, but once we came back off the ice it was scary. Take a 10ft length plank if your planning on going. The ice on the res is plenty thick around 14-16 inches.. Fishing was off and on, we had the best luck about 15 ft off the shore kind of northeast of the dam using a rat finkee with a waxworm. We kept about 7 rainbows most of them 16-20 range and were nice and thick. I don't see the ice being on the res much longer with these temps.

I just messaged the park on facebook and they said that the last he had heard was that the ice is 10-12 inches thick but that you would need a plank. I know this is a little late so if you did go today let me know I am thinking I am going out tomorrow

Thanks for the report. I kept a limit of those for the smoker about 2 weeks ago. Sure are nice fish.

I am thinking about one last trip down there on Thursday if it looks like it is going to be fishable.....

Thanks for the feedback. I decided to try fishlake instead and took my wife and only caught 2 perch in 4 hours of fishing. Looks like I should have tried Otter Creeks just in case. I'm thinking about going again later this week so let me know if anyone has an update.

Here's an update on Otter Creek from today:
2-6 feet of open water around the north end. A few folks got on the ice on the south end, but that may not be possible in another day or two. Slow fishing for those who got on the ice.

Thanks for the report! I'm considering an ice-off trip in a week or so, hopefully it'll be open water by then!
