I took a short drive to the north end today for a quick look. The wind has blown all the ice off the main lake. Am Fork Harbor is still capped, but Lindon is completely ice-free.

Yep, the north end is totally free !! I am thinking of putting the boat in at AF and use the transom as an ice breaker to get out into the main lake. Will have to cogitate on that some more !! Also, there was a pic of Provo on the news last night that looked as if it was ice free, need to call the Park and see if so !!
LET THE GAMES BEGIN !!

What a trooper, you can go break up the ice in the harbor for us! [

Same observations here. Drove around thru Genola and around to Lincoln. The south south end of Goshen Bay is open with ice again at about Lebaron's point. Areas of open water out in the middle in places but still iced up all the way out to Bird Island. A few popular cat fishin' spots along the Goshen Bay road were open and fishable. A couple of guys fishing the first spring.
The county had a crew with high-pressure cleaning outfits blasting off the pavilion tables and the cooking/grilling stands by the tables. Water is inching up the ramp. Won't be long now. The buoy left in the middle of the launch channel will need some attention before most boats can launch. Somebody might need to move it... This coming week of warm weather should help to take care of the ice problem. I'm ready. BLK [signature]

My experience at Utah Lake is limited to fishing catfish from north shore some 20 years ago. I've recently moved to Saratoga Springs and I'm real excited to learn what Utah Lake has to offer. It looks like the launching from Pelican Bay however, isn't a good option for me right now. I hear its too shallow.

Whole lake is too shallow. Even down at Lincoln where there is a little depth the channel is way too shallow to launch. I use a toon out there to get where I want to go.

So, I'm a little behind the curve, I guess. I know about ice-off at places like Strawberry where you can cast a lure out onto the ice and then drag it until it drops into the water where it attracts waiting fish. In the case of Utah Lake, where the ice is completely gone, what's the advantage? Are the fish especially hungry with the ice gone, or is it just a question of access for anglers? Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm afraid I might be missing something. Thanks in advance for educating me.

It's a warm water fishery. Now as the water warms it will only get better.

As a resident of Saratoga Springs, you can launch at the old Saratoga Springs harbor at the north end of the lake. This harbor is fed by several hot springs and rarely ices over, so it should be open now. Only residents of Saratoga Springs can use it however, one of the little niceties that occurred when the the developed the North end of the lake. '
It used to be a public ramp, but the city took it over and put in Pelican bay, ( which you still have to pay a fee unless you are a resident), as a replacement of the public ramp at the north end. You used to be able to walk in there also, but the city does not allow parking on the road and has taken over the public parking that used to be there, so you can't walk in any longer, unless you are a resident !!

Skinny-- Nothin' special about ice off other than the big lake finally becomes accessible to bank-tanglers, toons, tubes, and boats. There are a dedicated bunch of guys who seek the willy walleye in the rocky areas at Lincoln and they like to hit it early and hard. The ubiquitous channel cats are always hungry and can be caught early in the year with better fishing coming as the water warms, peeking when they become interested in sex and when the water temps reach the mid-sixties. There might even be a few of the few white bass that are willing to bite early in the year.
Mostly the ice off attraction, at least for myself, is a much needed relief from a lengthy period of cabin fever. Let it begin! BLK [signature]

I hope your right on this because I would like to launch at north end of the lake. I understood it differently than that. I thought the Saratoga Springs development took over the ramp by the hot springs and you must be part of that association to use the ramp. I thought regardless of where you lived you needed to pay the laugh fee at Pelican Bay if you used the ramp.

In order to launch at the north end ( the old resort ramp) you must be a honorable, dues- paid- up, homeowner of the Saratoga Springs Development Homeowner Association. No one else is allowed to launch.
The ramp at the south end of the town is owned by the City and is treated as a public park. It is free to enter if you are fishing from the shore. If you are launching a boat, you must pay an $8 daily use fee. P.S. It is not called the Pelican Bay marina. The correct name of the facility is ' Saratoga Springs Marina Park'. The launch ramp between these two ramps is privately owned/operated by the private club called 'El Nautica'. You must be an equity shareholder in that property to enjoy launching your boat there. Hope this helps? [signature]

I did not know that there was a special ASSociation at the North marina. I know that I have been told on several occasions that I could not fish there, when I came in from the lake in my boat. One snotty dude was going to call the police and I told him go right ahead as water is water and they can't keep people off the water. Only problem with the ASS. on the north end is they have stripped all the structure out of the harbor and channel. Used to be good for at least 3-4 good LMB in there a trip. There still are some big gills under the docks however, still worth the entry !!!
