Fish Lake 2/27
#1
Fished the south end of the lake and only caught a few perch, splake and rainbows. No size to the perch, and the splaked and rainbows were small Most of the trout we turned loose. The lake has 24" of good solid ice on it. We fished in 15' of water. I wanted to fish out deeper, but the battery for the fish finder was dead, so I didn't want to waste time not knowing where the fish would be. Headed there this Saturday for the last and Sad final trip of this years ice season, with a fully charged battery this time.

Thanks for posting your report, too bad the catching was so slow, hopefully your next trip there is better. Are the edges still good, any slush on the ice?

There was no slush on the ice. In some spots there was no snow. I think the there will be no slush this next weekend also. Edges were good and solid also.

We were there 2/29 and fished just out from twin creeks. Ice was a solid 2ft there also and we were only 25 ish yards from the open water. Edges were solid, no slush on the ice, and it was 34 ish when we left.

As far as fishing it was pretty slow. Tried for perch in 15-40' of water on the bottom and couldn't unhook the lock jaw. Caught a half dozen planter bows in 12' to 30' of water. No splake, perch, or lakers. Water clarity was good I could see jigs down to about 25'. Fish caught were split between jigged and jawjacker on glow ratfinks tipped with meal worm. Tried a bunch of different stuff on splake and lakers, changed presentations and could get a bite from them. Just up close and look then keep cruising. Left by 1 to spend some time with the fam on my day off.

I was there last Thursday (2/26) and also had a hard time catching perch. The guy I fished with did better, but even he had to work harder then usual

Sounds like it was the same result in my tent. Was also there the 27th and fished the south end with limited success. Were able to finally find the perch but they would come and go. Definitely not the fast action of previous years.

Went to Joe Bush on the 28th and had better success. Again it took some time to find them but this time the perch school seemed to stay put. Had much faster catching and long stretches of one fish after another with a couple smaller bows mixed in for fun.

How deep were you fishing? I may go to that end of the lake myself.

Maybe 10 to 15 feet. I forgot the charging cord for the finder so it was old school. Basically we were straight out from the access and drilled holes until we found the edge of the weed bed (maybe 25 yards out). My kids thought I was crazy but after drilling a hole I would lay on the ice and cover my head with a coat to block out the sun. You can see a lot that way. Anyway, fish were 1 reel or less off the bottom. Had several hit before we could even start reeling off the bottom.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the info. I get laughed at for doing the same thing. Laying down on the ice to look down the ice hole.
