UDWR Bear Lake Fishing Report (with UPDATED ICE CONDITIONS):
Don't put your ice fishing equipment away yet!!! The entire lake is frozen at this time and the fishing continues to very good for Cutthroat Trout and Lake Trout. There are some major cracks in the ice from the State Park marina to the north, but the ice from the marina to south is solid and ranges from about 10-12” and is holding up very well. Anglers are using 4 wheelers on the ice and it is mainly clear and solid ice. There is very little to no snow on the ice so it is quite slick at this time. Use extreme caution on ATVs since Bear Lake has many areas where there are springs and/or methane gas vents and there may be no ice or thin ice in these areas. The best spots to access the lake on the west side, and free to anglers, are ¼ mile north of Ideal Beach on 250 East Loop Street (to access the “rockpile”) and off 150 South Street in Garden City. Access is easy anywhere along the east shoreline
Fishing for Cutthroat Trout, Lake Trout and Whitefish has been good. The “rockpile” off Ideal Beach has been good for both trout and Whitefish. The Whitefish are mainly be taken right on top the rocks in depths of 40-50 using small jigging spoons such as Kastmaster and Swedish Pimples tipped with a meal, wax or regular worm. Trout are being found in water depths of 60-75’. Good lures to use for jigging for trout at this time include vertical jigging spoons such as Kastmasters, Swedish Pimples and Buck Shots Spoons, but tube jigs tipped with cisco continue to be the best lure at this time. Good spots to fish for Cutthroat and Lake Trout include Cisco Beach, 2nd Point, south of Gus Rich Point, off 150 South Street in Garden City and the rockpile off Ideal Beach.
Please remember, all Cutthroat Trout that are caught and don’t have a healed fin clip must be released. Large Lake Trout are not very good eating and take a long time to reach large sizes, and while they are legal to keep, many anglers are encouraging other anglers to release them.
Garden City Community Fishery Pond
The pond is thawing at this time and we don’t recommending ice fishing at this time. It is still not open water, so right now there is no fishing at this location.
Laketown Reservoir
Laketown Reservoir is also frozen at this time and the ice is about 8” thick. Ice fishing has been fiarfor Rainbow Trout and a few Cutthroat Trout using small jigs or ice flies tipped with a worm or meal worm. Access to this reservoir is only by 4 wheel drive and the road is muddy.
