The storm today has really put a hurting to the ice on the north side of the island.
While I was down there today the crack that had just opened up a little while ago was grabbed by the wind and opened up the lake up to almost where the Charelston boat ramp is. As the ice was going by I threw a rock on it and it went right through. The ice is little more than slush and was about four inches thick. It shouldn't be more than a couple of weeks until boats can be launched. [signature]

Thank you!
I was hoping to test a prop there tomorrow but I guess it will have to wait. [signature]

The gating factor for boat launch may be the big snow barriers DNR pushed up against the launch ramp. As of last week, it was still massive.
Anyone know if it's gone? [signature]

I've been there on the day that they fix that problem, they come down and push the snow into the water. When they were doing that I was fishing from shore at the main ramp and the ice had broken up completely, leaving open water with a few skiffs of ice floating. It was there as of Sunday night, and there was about 8 feet of open water between the shore and the ice.

I went trolling around deer creek this afternoon. The ice line is right where the cliff pullout is above the island. Only caught one. Anyone have good trout techniques for iceoff in a boat? I tried to fish right at the ice line. Maybe I was spooking them with the motor?

Think very shallow. I mean just a spinner with the rod pointed almost straight in the air. I also like small shallow running Rapalas or a small set of popgear and a worm.
If you are running a finder you will notice that you mark very few fish like in warmer weather. When I was down there Sunday I couldn't tell you how many trout were up rolling on the surface. [signature]
