I'm planning my first trip of the year to the gorge for April 7-10, leaving after work Thursday around 4PM and returning late Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. It will still be a bit chilly but the Kokanee and macs will be in the upper water column and easy to catch. I usually have the boat on the water at first light and stay out until just before dark unless we limit out earlier. Let me know if you are interested in going.

Sounds like a blast, but looks like Ira may have taken you up on it. I'd love to do it, but if I go that weekend it will probably be steelheading. Cool offer someone will be very lucky, oh by the way Ira is great to fish with and shares expenses, he's a good man. Later J

Funny thing is he was going to join me last year but he had an injury that prevented him from going, we have talked on the phone a few times and definitely seems like good company. As long as a big storm doesn't come through we will be going.

I'm curious, are you launching from Lucerne, and is it going to be open water at that time?

Yes, you can watch the ice receding on the flaming gorge webcams website.

The family and I are free the first week of April. I hadn't considered a Gorge trip so early. Might be fun despite the cold, if the fishing is good.
I've never fished Flaming Gorge but it's on my "must do" this summer. I absolutely love Kokanee fishing at Strawberry. I figured it out 2 years ago. I didn't mind catching the Cuts but holy cow once you've fought a koke, those Cuts feel like reeling in a dead twig. I spend a lot of time up there during that late June, early July timeframe when the action is hot. Outside of that hot-action window, Koke fishing is very slow for me.
So I'm curious about Kokanee at the Gorge. Is there a hot-action window there too or do they bite more regularly through the season? I presume the same presentations work there as they do at the Berry? Is there a better location on that big lake where the koke tend to congregate or they fairly spread out?
Thanks

I'm sure you're on top of this, but I sent an email to Lucerne Marina, asking about the ice-off. FYI this is Linda's reply:
[font "Tahoma,sans-serif"][#000000]Good morning Lanny
As of today, the ice in Linwood is starting to show some open water along the shore line. If we continue to have the warmer temps, the second week of April should be good. There is still ice on the main channel. As for the store, it should be open also that week.

Ya, its frozen big time except for around the shorelines. Main lake and all the little bays still have ice. Same with Sheep Creek and Anvil. Looks bleak for the next week or two. I'm cancelling trips weekly. Early April will be the ice-out fishing. Gonna be a different kind of spring.
There's open water in the lower canyon, but its been getting pounded horribly for a month now, and fishing for big macks is tough. Bows and pups are plentiful though.

Red Canyon has been ice free for over 3 weeks and Lucerne already has about 4 feet of open water along the shoreline, looks like we will be in good shape as long as we don't get some crazy late storms.
