Hey guys,
I'm going to be in St. George May 17-18 for the Governers Public Safety Summit and was wanting to stay an extra couple of days to take my brother over to the closest spot on lake Powell from St. George.
My question is this....is the fishing very good then, and where is the closest boat launch? I've never fished Powell before and I'll only be able to haul a 16' aluminum boat with a 25 hp motor. What would be the best species to go for if I only have 2 days and no previous knowledge of the lake?
I would really like to catch stripers if possible because that is one of the only species that I haven't caught in Utah yet. Any spots or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Mike

The nearest access at Lake Powell from St. George would be at the south end near Wahweep (Page, AZ). The striper fishing should be good in May using bait or trolling shad imitating lures.
Once you get close to your dates, you should check Wayne Gustaveson's Waynewords.com website for the latest fishing report. He's the oracle of Lake Powell and his information will be complete and up to date. Good luck and have fun.

should be a good year for bait fishing for stripers at the dam and power intake. This is good news for TopH20! He'll be able to get into the action this year!

Thanks guys, with it being such a big lake I really had no idea where to start. Thanks for the info on Wayne gustavesons website.
Also, can you fish in wawheap Marina from docks or shore just in case the wind is not cooperating, and if so, what would I expect to catch in late May?

There is a fishing dock at the Wahweep marina that is open to the public. Utah fishing license holders no longer need an Arizona reciprocal permit to fish in the Arizona section of Lake Powell. There are also quite a few places to access the shore near Wahweep but your fishing will obviously be very limited due to the nature of the shoreline. Your boat will provide you with the best fishing. Smallmouth and Largemouth fishing should also be very good in May.

Check the weather before you decide on the Powell excursion. The wind could be a factor. With your smaller rig, you might strongly consider staying put & fishing Sand Hollow for largies.

That is probably very wise advice.....but.....I have been known to be dumb in the name of fishing a time or two so I'm sure I would still try fishing from shore if the wind were bad. I guess I just REALLY want to catch some stripers this year and am hoping that there could be some within my reach when I head down there.
To be sure, I would never launch that boat on a big body of water if it looks like the weather would come up. Living on Bear Lake has taught me a thing or two about that!
Thanks for the advice!
