I'm just curious, what's you guys' thoughts on one of these? Thinking of building one and was wondering if anyone else has.

I would suggest you wear a good life jacket. PVC is brittle and connections can come apart.

Looking at how that sits in the water, I wonder if it would hold an individual as large as myself. The captain of that boat appears to be a smallish, elderly individual.
I looked at the cartoon next to this post after reading it. In the context of this post, this may be the first of these comics that made me laugh. ![]() [signature]

I think you need to factor in your size for sure. And I wouldn't take the thing out where there is any boat traffic.

Sure it would work and be a fun project too! To get more weight capacity just put a wye fitting on each end and a short 45 degree elbow in order to double the "logs". UV inhibiting paint would take care of the sunlight degrading it and keep it from being too brittle.
Just for fun, I made PVC pontoons to put in place of my inflatable pontoons several years ago. I used 3 pieces per side that were made from 8" pieces of sewer pipe that were capped and 8' long. I banded them together so that they were in a triangle cross section with the two pieces at the top and the single tube at the bottom....the single piece acted like a keel. It worked just fine, but I felt kinda silly and only tried it twice on a local pond here before putting my vinyl and rubber pontoons back on. They weren't the lightest either, but it was done with my boys just to see if it would work because they had ideas of making the frame from PVC also and building their own PVC pontoon boats.....they never made it any further than the initial pontoon test. Mike P.s. I'm a sucker for crazy looking ideas like that! [signature] |
