Dave and I decided to brave the cool morning air and headed for Lincoln Beach Saturday morning. We got the the launch at 6 AM and it was dark and deserted. I am breaking in a new lower unit on my little Merc so in order to keep the RPMs down, we started early.
BLK gave the conditions in the channel so I'll not repeat them. Water temp was a little under 47 when we started and about 48 when we left around noon.
We worked our way from the jaws to the 3rd spring casting cranks, jigs and crawlers and had only one thump between us. It didn't know how to hang on so we assume it was a white bass. We were both casting with one rod and dragging bait with the other. Dave did get one white about 10" just before we got to the third spring, it came on a dragged piece of crawler.
Since things were not happening for us on the point we picked up the gear and headed to the island. Longish trip aT 2 k RPM. There were guys fishing on the West side so we started at the south point and worked up the east side of it. We insanely did the same thing as we did at the point, casting to the shallows and dragging baits behind the boat, and expecting a different result. We got almost the same result. In about 6' of water I got a thump and the bait rod. It was good fish and put up some struggle before beginning the cold water roll of a cat.
It turned out to be a chunky channel just under 25 inches and almost 6 pounds. I guess it was my birthday present. We stayed at the Island until about 11 without any more inquiries.
Before we went home we made the slow trek to the area near the slough mouth. we worked from 6' in to about 2' and had 2 hits on the baits at about 3', but missed them both. We then followed the 3' depth back to the harbor and had several more inexperienced fish hit, but didn't get to see any.
Not a great day catching, but a good day fishing, at least nobody had to bring the skunk home.
