I got bored on Sunday and decided to pull out the old fly tying stuff and try my hand at kokanee trolling flies. Looking through an Alaska fly tying book I picked a few that looked like they might work for our land locked sockeye down here. Doing some Googlin' I found others that have dabbled in tying flies for Kokanee trolling. No idea if they will work, but what the heck, why not give it a go. I will post results when I get around to trying them.

Here's one I tied a few days ago. I'm not sure if it's a fly or a lure or a fly/lure, but it should be a killer.

One thing about tying your own stuff. It always works until you can prove that it doesn't. The old guilty until proven innocent theory.
They all look like good kokanee chow to me.

[#0000ff]I used to make these to order, for a couple of guys who did well with them at the Gorge. They said the key was to have a good dodger...about 14" ahead of the fly...to give it maximum wiggle. And they swore by the double hook setup.
Also made some orange patterns but can't find any pics of them.

As a long time resident of Alaska and having fished for sockeyes (ocean running kokanee) for years, you should know that kokanee don't feed when they start running up the rivers. People don't catch them trolling in the ocean either.
I have had sockeye hit a fly from time to time, but most of the time you catch them by threading the line through their mouths as they are running up the rivers and tend to stay next to the shores of the rivers.
However, with that said, I think your flies will do just as well as any other kokanee lure. Put a little smell on them and troll them behind a dodger. Can you double or triple them up on the same line? That might be worth a try. I really like the silver lace. Also, I like the wide gap hooks you are using. We always tied our salmon flies up with hooks with a wider gap, so it would hook then in the jaw, versus just a flap of skin in their mouth.
I have only started fishing for kokanee these past couple of years. I caught some up on Porcupine the year before last. All they wanted was wedding rings. This year, I am going to spend more time at Strawberry now that I have a down rigger.
I think I will get out my fly vise and tie something up and add them to my arsenal of kokanee gear. Great way to have something more to try.

I caught a nice batch of kokes at Porcupine last summer using pink squids behind a silver or silver and pink sling blade. Bigger ones were about 50' down. I figure if the maribou gives the flies better action in the water they may induce a strike more. No idea if it will, but that's the reasoning. I tried Porcupine last Saturday but got skunked. Marked plenty of fish from 30ft all the way to the bottom. Just couldn't get them to strike. I bet being from Ak and fishing here is a bit of a kill joy. Someday I'll make it up there and go for the big stuff.

Those look like they would work to me. Never know till you try. That's part of the fun about it though. Experimenting till you find what works. I modified a few of the hooks and cut the eye off of one and silver soldered the two shanks together to form a double hook side by side. A guy I know that ties a lot uses them often but they are about $2 each. They should do but I will have to be careful about rust.

Looks like it should get 'em upset enough to strike. I posted a few more that I tied with double hooks side by side.

Nice ...... I like the orange one with the pink chenille body that you tied and the hot pink with the purple flashaboo that TD tied.
No self respecting Kokanee could go without either one of these.
