Throwable PFD bag?
#1
Hey everyone,
Made it out to Willard today, for some slow fishing for us.. But anyways we had an encounter with the green pants there. I passed/had everything EXCEPT a throwable PFD. What kinds/brands are you guys using? Where did you pick it up? I'm heading to Lees marine tomorrow for some plugs and an oil filter and was going to look there. Thanks for any suggestions! I try to keep them state boys happy. The weather was good today at least! And the wind held back until about 3-4.

A throwable is pretty much similar to a cushion.

Oh okay, I'm glad you specified! I was thinking it was a ?floatable rope in a bag? I'll go grab a cushion then!

What you are referring to is a throw-bag - they are not required but I have one and would suggest everyone keep one onboard. What is required is a Type IV Throwable Floatation Device (PFD). It's a life ring or floating cushion. My personal feeling is that I would rather have the throw-bag than a throwable cushion. You throw the cushion in the wind and it goes somewhere other than where you were throwing it and your pretty much done with that. With a throw bag you can keep trying if you miss your mark.

I have a 75 foot rope in the boat with a carabineer on one end, and the other tied to one of the inside cleats. I just snap the carabineer to the throwable cushion, and, presto, a ready made, cheaper throw bag. [sly]

Just like with the fire extinguishers, make sure it has a tag on it that says "USCG approved".

I had a sheriff in Idaho that inspected my boat and he looked specifically for the USCG approved labeling.
