6 20 16 Too Darn Hot at the Beach
#1
My 5 year old grandson Luke is staying with us for a few days so I took some time off work and took him out to Lincoln Beach to catch catfish. He and my 3rd son Jeremy and I headed out about 10:30 AM. After some trouble keeping the motor running (which turned out to be a damaged connector), we got out on the water about 11:30. Air temp was over 90 and the water was just under 75 degrees. We anchored in 4 feet of water off the point and before I could get all the rods in the water Luke had a fish on. It turned out to be a bullhead, which was fortunate. Last year when he caught his fist cat it was 4 lbs. and after we got it in the boat he complained that grandpa had helped! This one he did all by himself.

We got the others rods in the water and the bite was on! When a channel hit, we offered Luke the rod and he said “No, I don’t want to catch a fish, I want to go home!” What[Tongue] Well I kept the rods working while Jeremy tried to figure out what happened. We were getting lots of bites and Luke was not interested. Finally he agreed to drink some water and sat down to watch.

Jeremy and I took turns on the kitties while the other one worked on Luke, all he wanted to do was play a video game on the iPhone? He couldn’t see the screen well in the midday sun so Jeremy sat him on the floor and put the throw-able cushion above him for shade. That did it. He played for 30 minutes and I finally offered him the rod when another channel hit and he took it. This time though he wanted to sit on grandpa’s lap so I could help him. In just a couple of minutes he again lot interest, but we managed to get the fish in. I asked if he was feeling better and he said “my tummy hurts, I want to go home.”

So at 1 PM we picked up the gear and headed in. When we got in the car he perked up again and we realized he must have overheated[blush]

It was just too darn hot! Next time we will go in the morning or I will put up the top before he gets too hot. Hopefully by next year he will only remember catching the fish!

Even though it was the middle of the day, in 90 minutes we brought 6 channels and 4 mudders to the boat, and missed as many fish as we hooked. We released the ones Luke didn't want to keep. The fishing was hot, but the sun was TDH!

[#0000FF]Nice work.

When ya take small kids (or big girls) it is important to keep them comfy. Too hot, too cold or getting hungry or in need of a potty can put a damper on the fishing enjoys. It's gotta be about them.

Sounds like the fish are still active. Up at Willard today, not so much. But it WAS hot. TDH.

Looking like it will only be around 80 this weekend, even if it's cool we have the bimini up for shade.
