Kokanee and a Full Moon
#1
I had the pleasure of going to Strawberry today with Robert (liketrolling) and my friend Larry. Both Larry and and Robert are 40 year veterens of Kennecott so they had a lot in common. Amazing to work for one company for 40 years. That does not happen much anymore.
Anyway, we thought maybe the full moon might thwart our efforts to catch fish but we thought wrong. Right from the start we started catching fish. It took us awhile to dial in the Kokanee but they came to play as well. Not red hot on the salmon but good. We boated a bunch and lost a few. All in all, it was a good day. My favorite was the 21" fat rainbow we caught. Wow. What a big fish. He will make some tasty smoked fillets.
Robert and his tracker was amazing. He is really dialed in on how to fish with maximum efficiency. What a nice guy and his boat is perfect for what he does best - trolling. We had a blast and I can't thank him enough for having us on board and allowing my friend Larry to come along. We lost track of how many fish we caught. I guess the moon thing is bogus. Or maybe not. I can't seem to get a good handle on that phenomenon. Some times it just does not matter. Go figure.
Here are a couple of nice fish we kept.

Good going! I'm still having trouble with the Full Moon phase...what time of day were doing best? Was the wind tough to deal with for you? tks...

I was out yesterday as well. The full moon didn't seem to detract. Had probably my fastest day for kokes of the year.

Robert is partly to blame for my addiction to the Gorge and buying my own boat, and I Smile ear to ear every time I catch a fish. Never a dull moment around him that is for sure, loves to chat and is a very nice guy. And definitely gives a lot of folks boat envy.

We started at 6:30am and the fish were ready to bite. All morning was active.
The wind does cause navigating issues but did not stop the catching. We just had to have someone on the wheel constantly.

Well...according to the solunar tables, today and tomorrow are the best days to fish in July. Looks like you learned to use that moon phase to your advantage!

If that solar lunar table is right, then why do so many fishermen think that a full moon is not a good thing. Fishing with a full moon is generally regarded as not the best time to fish because they feed all night and don't bit the next day.
Very interesting.
