Nope, they ain't at Lincoln. I was there fishing from the shore 'til 2 a.m. and never caught or saw a wb. Usually this time of the year the wb young-of-the-year are actively nipping midge hatches in the channel and in the shallow water all along the shore. I have not seen any baby wb activity at all this year. It's gonna be slim pickin's for wb this year.
I fished for cats last night from 10:00 until 2 a.m. and the only bite I got was from a skeeter. I fished at the first spring, the third spring, and the end of the launch channel and could find no action anywhere. Couple of other guys showed up about 12:00 and fished at the first spring but not sure if they had any luck.
I'll keep after 'em but I don't expect to do very much ketchin' until the water temps start to cool.

[#0000FF]Not likely to see any higher water in UL until late next spring...if then. If there is another poor snow year, and if they again decide to hold the water upstream in Jordanelle and Deer Creek, poor old Utah Lake will be even worse than this year.
They will shut the gates down at the mouth of the Jordan River around the first of October, but without any water coming into the lake there will be little rise in water level for a long time.

Ben-- You should have no trouble getting out in your puddle jumper. The water level hasn't changed much in the past week or so. I launched my tin tub at the first spring with no trouble. Had to back the truck out where the wheels were half covered but the bottom was bedrock so no fear of a lost truck.
Go get 'em!

With the water so low does anyone have an idea what the possible kill rate will be with this winters ice-over ?

[#0000FF]The lower the water and the longer a complete ice cap the greater the potential for winter kill. But the lake seldom freezes completely...at least for very long. If there is any open area to get aerated from the wind it will help a lot.
That being said, there can be winter kills in some of the shallower areas if they freeze over and the fish stay there. We saw that in Mud Lake (Provo Bay) a couple of years ago. Early freeze, long ice duration. When the ice blew off in early March there were lots of dead white bass and bullheads washing up on the shorelines.
No way to predict it, but we will know the fish are in trouble if it ices up early and completely. On the positive side, there are some deeper areas that are spring fed and the fish in those areas should make it even through the worst of winters. Might take a while for the lake to come back strong, but it has in the past.

I was thinking about the springs in the lake last week, and how that would affect ice, and fishing with the low water. My thought is that it will certainly make for more weak areas of ice, and the warmer water entering the lake will have a shorter distance to reach the ice, therefore the water temperature of a warm spring will be more likely to weaken the ice.
In return, there will be more chance of fisherman falling through, albeit up to their knees or waist.
As for the current harbor report, the Pelican bay harbor is looking good if you are after some algae and mud. there may be a few inches of water. It would be tough to launch a paddleboard or kayak.

[#0000FF]Most of the (formerly) warm springs emptying into Utah Lake around Lincoln Beach are only a trickle of their former flow. Increasing development and demands on groundwater...and less of it filtering down from poor snowpacks...have reduced the springs to almost nothing. And the temperatures are barely above the average lake temps.
The temperatures of incoming springs is not likely to seriously weaken any ice cover. Only a couple of spots between AF and Saratoga Springs where warm inflows keep holes open during the winter...sometimes. Whenever there is an open hole or weak spot the thinner ice does not extend very far around the hole.
Sad to hear about Pelican Bay...and the other harbors as well. And the last time I tried to launch a float tube off the Knolls I had to slog through sticky mud for a couple hundred yards before I could sit down and start kicking. Tough duty. The fishing was almost worth it though. Almost.

As they continue to hold water in the higher reservoirs, we'll name the abyss, Utah Pond and rename what was once Utah Lake, The Great Pasture. It will have natural irrigation from the springs and no more carp problems as the carp will not need to be netted nor transported to fertilize crops with the algae bloom also making the topsoil amazingly fertile for a plethora of new crops produced by Utah and displacing California in production as they run out of water. Pheasant hunters will applaud their new hunting habitat and new maps will show the area as green instead of blue. TubeDude will hike in through the grasslands to fish Abyss Pond unmolested by the power squadron and continue to give us fishing reports and pictures of huge catfish and also an odd unknown fish. The Federal Government will declare it a protected species and thwart plans to flood The Great Pasture. Of course, Al Gore will blame Global Warming and call for global taxation, global governance and us to buy his carbon credits to reverse this as an emergency measure before Utah is awash with rising sea levels. In anticipation of all this, I've stocked up on surf casting equipment and invite my friends here to practice surf casting with me to be ready. We'll have surf casting distance competitions to be ready for Olympic Surf Casting to displace Olympic Ice Carving because ice carving never belonged in the Olympics, but Al Gore, an avid fan of ice carving, will blame a scarcity of ice on Global Warming, too. I have plenty of surf casting equipment for many of us to practice at the same time.
