Finally caught my first wiper.......
#1
I've had wipers on my list of fish species that I wanted to catch this year, and have made a couple of shore trips to Willard without any success. I had a little bit of time to kill after work yesterday so I went over to one of the local community ponds, and was surprised to see a kid pulling in a few wipers... Threw out my line, and sure enough, was able to catch about 8 wipers, with the biggest being roughly 8 inches and the smallest being about a minnow Big Grin. Looked at the stocking report while I was there, and found that they had stocked a few dozen wipers in the pond recently. I assume this is to control the population of some other kind of fish in there? Either way, never expected to get my first wiper (albeit a tiny one) at a community pond.

One last species to cross off my list for this year is tiger trout. anyone know of any places where a person without access to a boat can have a reasonable chance of success?

[#0000FF]Probably the best place for a bank tangler to tangle with some decent tiger trout would be Huntington (Mammoth) lake up out of Fairview. There is parking near the dam...perhaps the best place for shorebound angling success. Walk about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way across the dam and start fishing. Bait on the bottom will work...worms, minnows, etc. But marabou jigs, flies, spinners and other lures will do the job too.

As the lake keeps dropping (low now) and the water keeps cooling the majority of the fish congregate in the deepest spots right out from the dam. When they get active a fly and bubble rig can be deadly. I have even done well on small crankbaits retrieved only a short ways under the surface.

It's a bit of a drive (2 hrs. from Salt Lake) but there is great scenery and good fishing. Lots of wildlife at times too...before the guns start booming.
