Scofield Minnow Run
#1
All of this talk about all of the chubs in Scofield has peaked my interest in making another chub run to Scofield. I have found that those huge chubs make excellent cut bait, and sturgeon bait. If anyone would like to join me on a run to Scofield, this Saturday send me a PM. I will be taking my casting net and a couple fishing poles. We will be fishing from the shore.

[#0000FF]I doubt you will find any chubs or redsides in the same shallow water we found them earlier. They go deeper in the colder water...at least far enough from shore that they are not within reach of a cast net.

You will probably be able to cast out far enough to get some of the chubosaurs. And I suspect that is the primary quest.

Thanks for the information. I will take whatever size that I can get (they all work) but I have found that the huge ones work great cut up in small strips. The skin on the larger ones is tough and I can catch several fish on the same chunk of bait.

PS -- starting next week, I plan on making several runs to Bear Lake, with the boat, for whitefish, macks, cutthroats and cisco (if it freezes by the cisco run I will be fishing through the ice). Anyone wants to join me send me a PM.

The Chubs were thick around the docks at Madsen bay about a month ago. Not sure if they will still be there. Are there still redside shiners in Scofield?

We caught a few in our casting nets a couple months ago, before the algae die off.

Since Scofield is one of the first lakes to freeze, I would be glad to catch you a bunch of the larger chubs through the ice. I got enough last November to hold me for awhile. Ice fishing for anything is fun if the other lakes are not capped yet.
Let me know how many you want. I caught about 12 to 18 an hour when I targeted the chubs.

Any idea how close Scofield is to freezing this year?

What do you use to target chubs?

I haven't heard a recent report but I will check with the local CO who works with me part time.
When I target chubs at Scofield I use a SMALL ice jig tipped with a SMALL piece of nightcrawler. I normally use an attractor of some type for weight to get to the bottom and then about 8 to 10 inches of light leader to the ice jig. By small I mean a 1/32 oz. jig with a piece of worm. I've found the chubs anywhere in the channel leading to the dam. I like to fish in 12 to 16 feet of water. Conditions may vary due to the extremely low water conditions.
I usually go to the state park boat ramp and walk across to the other side when the ice conditions are safe. For me, safe ice is at least 4 to 5 inches of good, clear ice.

Everyone please remember to practice ice safety as we begin another hard deck season.

After reading fuzzyfisher's report I don't think I will be going to Scofield on Saturday on a minnow run. I have a hunch that Scofield will be frozen too much to not fish through the ice (at least in the dam arm) and the ice will be too thin to safely fish on. Anyone interested in catching crappie at Pineview?

I've winterized my boat for the year and am now using my pontoon boat. I'm going to try and hit Strawberry as many times as I can before ice up. Been doing pretty well this fall.

I've always wanted to fish for Crappie but never seem to make it out. I understand they are very good eating. I especially want to fish Sand Hollow for Crappie this winter as we spend winters in St. George.

My first boat was an inboard outboard and I always got frustrated when I winterized my boat and then there was a month (sometimes more) of good weather. With my current boat I pull it out of the water and crank the starter a couple times and it is winterized until my next trip. I enjoy fishing from my boat until the local waters are iced up.

Well, this is your chance to fish for them this Saturday. Crappie caught this time of year, to me, taste as good as perch. Also, because they are much larger, than the local perch, they provide a much larger filet to eat.

I appreciate the offer I really do. However, I'm going to have to ask for a rain check as I've already made plans. Hope you do well and wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving.

I took a drive up to Scofield today, and most of the lake is still ice free. But the Mountain View ramp and docs all have ice around them. I'm not sure how quickly the ice will grow, but it can't be long now.
