Gorge Meat Run

Had an blast. I took my 4 and 6 year old sons. We set up in 80 FOW at 0730 and fished until1300. We iced 25 pups and four bows in my tent. Had lots of fish get off. Little men couldn't keep the line tight. Biggest my boys landed was five. My nephew lost a 10lber in my brothers tent. Fished out of buckboard. Ice was seven inches. Great meat run. We bottle it and I'll do a smoker full as well.

What was the snow on the ice like?
We were thinking of Buckboard or a bit further South. Did you you out on the lake very far or was the 7" of ice by the shoreline?
Lots of ? I know but the gorge ice conditions seem to be fickle.

We headed up Friday late and stayed in green river. Tubes of course. Ice was seven in the middle. Kind of a rat trap to get around all the pressure ridges. 1 inch of powder on top the ice. Best walking conditions I've ever had there.

We just got back from a trip as well, we were in the sage creek area. Tons of people out for the bash. We didn't do well for burbot at all, caugh 3 small ones and 1 27 inch burbot. Ended up with 9 lake trout and a few get off on the way up or at the hole.

Man, I wish I knew how to do that. We have been skunked at the Gorge so many times we quit trying.

A few years ago, our total take for 7 trips in two years was one fat 17" rainbow.

Where on the gorge did you go?
Were you on the bank, through the ice, or on a boat?

Can't remember when I didn't catch something each trip in the last five years or so, but there were plenty of trips before then when I didn't know what to use or how that I did get skunked.

Please provide more info so we can help you get into some fish.

We fished out of Lost Dog or Buckboard, two of the trips were during the burbot bash. We originally were most interested in burbot, but Little Lakers would have been great.

I couldn't list all the the hinges we tried. We stayed over all night.once in negative 5 ° weather with a crisp wind, and no tent. Tube jigs in all kinds of colors, glow stuff, blade baits like the sonic lure, shrimp, worms, chub and sucker meat, craw dad and shrimp oil, jigging spoons, rattle spoons, all kinds of plastics, jigging rapalas, ice flies, wobbly jigs, wax worms, meal worms, castmasters.

One night we fished right in among some gus who invited us over. And watched them pull out a few burbot and several trout, and they left us their holes and showed us everything they were doing. And we struck out.

I just chalked it up to a "snakebite". It's the same way for me at Strawberry. It seems I can, at least sometimes, catch fish about everywhere else.

But, i'll take any tips, in case I ever get another chance to go.

Very likely not in your case, but possibly, and maybe basic info for others that I've learned over the years ------ odd smells on your hands ---- my first experience learning this was many years ago up in the Uintah's, where you had to use mosquito repellant or be eaten alive...Well, you get that stuff on your hands, handle your fishing gear, bait, lures, flies, then wonder why the fish aren't biting....Years after that while ice fishing and getting sun burnt or snow burnt, I started using sun screen for that.....same thing, fish don't bite with sun screen smell on your hands, or gas and oil smells in the summer from your boat, etc. etc.......What to do? Now I wash thoroughly after these, or rub my hands in sand, or carry handi-wipes in my boat, or use rubber gloves, or rinse good in the ice water after first drilling a hole......Guluk...

I would say to avoid crowds and move if you're not catching fish.I think it's 80% location 20 technique. I've done great in anywhere from 8 to 25' deep of water. Find some good crawdad area, (small rocks). Keep your spoon or tube jig charged. I like a 1/2" by 1 1/2" chunk of meat (chub or sucker) about 1 to 3" off the bottom. Keep most of the hook exposed for a good hookset. Sometimes they like it jigged, sometimes dead stick. Hope this helps.

Couldn't agree more. I am very meticulous about my hands. I have a special no scent soap from lindy I use whenever I handle my gear. I've seen video of before and after sunscreen application scaring the fish away. Saw an article in an ice fishing magazine about it as well.
