Flaming Gorge snow / slush
#1
Heading up to the Gorge this week and was hoping some nice folks who are there this weekend could tell me how the snow / slush conditions are up there. I was hoping to take my wheeler out. I went to East Canyon and Hyrum this week and they were both a no go for wheelers due to the soup [:/]

There is never slush on the gorge. The wind sweeps it clean.

Went out with my brother last year and there was a foot of snow and four to six inches of slush. Granted is was two days after the storm had went through but it does happen.

My friend was supposed thead out there today. If he did I'll post up what he found.

Talked to my friend and he said that there was maybe two or three inches of snow and they were fishing on twelve inches of ice up by Buckboard.

Said that the wind was blowing pretty good today and that there are pressure ridges to watch out for.

Thanks for that info a bow nut! First time headed to the Gorge so just not sure what to expect. If that's all the snow there is and the wind keeps it off it should be a great trip!

Not true...... It isn't usual but it does occur.

I had a 4 wheeler out last year and almost buried it in the middle of the reservoir due to slush ice. If you can take a wheeler and a snowmachine then you can go just about anywhere.

I havn't been this year so I cant say what is best. With all of the snow this year if it was me Id take my sled.

What about the Utah side? Any ice there yet?

There is ice on the Utah side but I don't have any details on thickness etc. Saturday, I saw a few people fishing Sheep Creek Bay and there was also a group of people fishing near shore in the back of Linwood Bay. Both bays are ice covered.

Spent the day at Buckboard, no slush, crossed Big Bend on a wheeler, 12" ice w/very little snow.

I appreciate the Flaming Gorge snow / slush reports because I'm going there February 10 - 12.

Wind swept. Excellent!

But, reading about the perch tournament wind inspired me to be prepared for strong wind.

I got some good ice fishing tent anchors. I'm thinking I might rig the ones for the guy lines with 550 parachute cord long enough to allow the tent to be blown down flat yet cinched up tight with a short piece of 50 pound test. That way maybe it can simply be blown down flat without blowing away or being torn to shreds. Anyone figure out a best way to do that?

Fortunately, Flaming Gorge has been uncharacteristically calm every time I fished there.

But, please keep the snow / slush reports coming.

Thanks everyone for the great info! It turned out to be the perfect week to go. Very little wind, ice / snow were easily wheeler-able, first two days even gave us sun and almost 40°temps. Covered 14 miles one the ice with no issues. These fine fellers were caught a couple miles south of buckboard between 3 of us. We actually caught quite a few more we let go but keeping more started to look a lot like work rather than easy food at that point. Lol! Awesome first time at the Gorge.
