Made the trip up to Mantua this morning. Got there about 10:30. I walked out way beyond the other fisher types. There was about 4'' of snow over 3" of slush. Was able to get on and off the ice with no problem. The ice is getting soft and wet all the way through. I was marking lots of fish but the catching not good. Got a couple short bites, more than likely perch by the way they were acting. Caught 1 16"rainbow. Glad I released it because it was the only fish I put on the ice.

With all this unsettled weather we've been having This week and for the next few days I'm surprised anyone is catching anything - so at least you weren't skunked, right?
We had lots of passing show showers all day today, sometimes so heavy it was almost a white out - luckily we were safely indoors and between showers it'd melt of the hard surfaces so we never had to shovel, plow or blow it off. Was that the kind of weather day you had up there too?

Yes the the clouds would move in then the sun would shine then it would snow then the wind would blow. It went back and forth like that all the time I was there. When I left it started snowing pretty hard and did so until I got down to Brigham.
I hope the ice will hold; I would like to give it another try.

R2U2, I was just wondering about the ice. I haven't been up in over a week. Sounds like I need to get up there this week or I'll be waiting to take the float tube. Thanks for the report.

I also gave it a go yesterday morning. Got there around 10:30 and just fished off that west side, not far out...maybe 40 yards.
Didn't take long to find out it was a slush monster right under a couple inches of fresh snow. Drilled a couple holes and the water level came up so that I was fishing in about 5" of water above the hole. Lots of slush on that ice, and I think it was only 3 or 4" of good ice underneath all that mess.
When I first put down the lines I caught perch right off the bat. One nice one, and then 3 smaller ones. Threw them all back. Started getting windy, but didn't want to set up the tent in that slushy mess. Only fished for 20 minutes or so and got the heck out of there. Toyed with driving over to the SE side where I saw other tents, but thought better of it. Hopefully they did better than I did.
Maybe give it another try Monday Morning if that slush hardens up? Anyone want to go?
