I was hoping some of you master tube and tooners could share a few photos and insights into your custom rod holders. I just purchased a toon. I'm sure this has been covered before. I made a cursory attempt at finding the threads. But I figured with the ice ruined, and the cold temps back, we got the time.

[#0000FF] There are a lot of different makes and models of pontoons...frames and frameless. Each offers different options for attaching rod holders, tool racks and sonar setups.
If you visit the "Pimping Section" of the Tubing and Tooning board you will see ideas from quite a few different members from around the country.
If you have a toon with a sturdy frame, and are okay with mounting directly to the frame, here are some pics of one installation.

Otherwise, if you would like to bring your craft by my tubeatorium I will be happy to look it over and offer some options on some of the things you might like to do.
Been that, done there...or whatever.

Thanks tubedude! I looked for that forum under the Utah boards. Didn't remember it was a separate board. Great ideas, I'll try a few and after I screw it all up I might take you up on your offer.

Hey Pat, in looking at some of those pics, it appears that they are VERY OLD, corded drill, really man, where is your up to date cordless ?? Just giving you a bad time. One little wrinkle that I came up with to lock my rod holders in was to drill a 1/8 inch hole all the way through the base and tube. I then attached a 1/8 x 2.5 inch cotter pin to 6-8 inches of 10lb steel leader material. A small ring terminal was then crimped on the other end and the screw holding one side of the base was placed through it. When the tube is in the base, the cotter pin slides through the holes in the base and tube, locking them in place. You can remove the tubes during transport so you are not losing them. To dark to take pics tonight, but I will take some tomorrow and post them !!!

TD, on for example your post attachment pictures, is that a "T" PVC pipe fitting that you've cut basically in half or what type of pvc pipe fitting is that one that is mounted flat on the rail?

So instead of drilling a hole through my new tram I was thinking of using the same pvc setup but attaching the cut t with shrink tubing. Anybody tried it?

[#0000FF] If I am going to need several of these "mounting bases" I cut a "cross" fitting in half rather than multiple Ts.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]Hey...to me the cord IS modern. That was an upgrade from the wood -burning steam models I used before.
The cotter pin idea is good...if you are prone to losing the rod tubes. I ain't. Plus, on most of my current rod holder setups I use shorter tubes and the rod handle goes all the way through the tube. So a pin would be a blocking hazard. See pics.
By the way, one of the newer "refinements" on my rod tubes is to use a heat gun to heat and flare the top openings on the rod tubes. Makes it a lot easier to stick the rods back in the tubes during a rod change. See pic.

[#0000FF]Some tooners simply don't like the idea of putting additional holes in their frames. But the tiny 1/8 in screw holes...filled in with screws...do not weaken the frame in vital stress areas. If your frame is like most there are larger holes in several places for attachment pins, etc. And if you are concerned about rust, then just seal each hole with some silicone gel as you screw down your attachments.
Still other tube and toon PVC constructionists look for the "clamp on" fittings you can buy in the plumbing section of the big box stores...or a good plumbing supply store. You might have to look harder to find them but there are clamps both in metal and PVC. Just be sure you get the right size, both for your frame and the PVC tubes. And make sure you get an adaptor if you have threads on the clamp. You either need thread adaptors or slip fittings if you are just going to glue or screw.
You CAN use shrink tape or tubing. Or you can just duct tape the heck out of it. I have made a couple of "modular" setups where all you had to do was tape or bungee the PVC to the frame. See pics of one I made for sonar attachment. You can do the same thing by making a lash-down frame for rod holders.
Many of my early rod holders...especially on float tubes...were modular creations lashed into place using D rings while fishing. Look at the attached chapter from my tubing book for ideas.

Thanks TD.
I recently got a fish finder/transducer so I've been deliberating about how to mount the transducer for a kayak. I think I've decided to go with a premade arm transducer but since I'm a rookie mounting transducers and such, I'll likely play around with it and try making my own PVC one to see which I liked more.

[#0000FF]That's what that Starvation brown said. It was embarrassed to be seen with you.
That was taken about this time of year...in 2014.

[#0000FF] Hey, hey, hey. Those are "alternative facts". I was there. Remember. All we caught were trout...the one brown and a grundle of 'bows. I know that was not a grimace of pain on your face. Looked more like a . And the attached pic of all those bows in the "dead well" are not all mine.
Still, I know that bass are your first love so we won't start calling you "troutrods" just yet.
