Echo 2/28/17.... back in action.
#1
Spanked the Perch at Echo. Edges on the east side are hit or miss. I hadn't seen a report in a while but took the chance that it had frozen anyway because of the cold nights this past week. The main ice pack shifted to the east side of the lake as it was rising. Some ridging has occured on east shore. The ice where we got on was 5" (no gap) and 10 feet out the ice was 8" clear. Out in the middle the ice is 10". Be careful here, there looks to still be some wet spots near shore here and there, and the far south end of the lake is pretty sketchy. Lots of water coming in, but also lots flowing out below the dam.

Also should note, we are the only 2 people in the entire lake.

Thanks for sharing the great news! Sounds like we'll be heading that way instead of Pineview on Thursday morning. How deep was the water that you were catching your perch if you don't mind me asking?

We were in about 30-34'. South of the marina a bit. Just make good choices about ice access. There are a couple drainages that flow in on the east side. Anywhere near those and I would say the ice ins't safe to get on. No visible open water though. From what I could see the marina didn't look slushy, just snow covered. But I didn't get on there or personally inspect the ice thickness at that location.

Random question, but what do you do or intend to do with a sled full of fish?

Personally, I like to take mine and liberate their meaty parts, roll them in breading and deep fry them, then transfer them into the holding tank south of Beardsville. They magically convert into a kind of brown trout (darnedest thing, that) and then I release them into the Orem Municipal Reservoir via a porcelain fish ladder in my basement.
Random question, but what do you do or intend to do with a sled full of fish?
They are currently pretty frozen in the sled out in my garage. When I return home from work this evening I will fillet them with an electric knife. Then skin the fillets, then cut out the rib cages. This batch of fish should yield about 2 pounds of finished fillets. I package the boneless fillets in bags with about 25-30 fillets per bag. Then I pull a bag out when I want to have a fish fry. If you haven't had batter fried perch you are missing out.

I actually do fish fry parties during the winter with friends and coworkers. I had one this past Sunday believe it or not. We fed about 12 people. I cooked up about 100 fillets and homemade french fries.... it was GLORIOUS. The limit on perch is 50 per day per person, count the fish in the sled. I was fishing with a friend. We didn't even keep our limit, just over half of said limit actually. You're no longer invited to the fish fry [Tongue]

I think some people may think that's a lot of perch, it is not. Some people want to be told where the fish are, go there and fish for two hours, come back with a limit. Such a scenario doesn't exist with any fish, least of all in the case of perch. Look at Fish Lake. Tiny little fish that are old enough to be sexually mature because they don't get enough food because there are too many but people still fail to catch there due to drilling a hole and sitting at it for the whole day, or the two hours they choose to spend fishing.

Captianjac15 , I want to take my girlfriend ice fishing but she is a bit scared of the ice. Can we have a chat on the phone so that I can get a better understanding of where the entry point and good ice is at Echo please?

Thanks for the response. I wasn't judging by the way. I've never fished for perch and I've never eaten a perch so I was curious what people do with all that perch meat. Sounds like it's a tasty fish.

Try it, you'll like it! In my opinion, the only other better tasting freshwater fish are walleye and they are lot harder to come by this time of year.

Anyone fishing for Walleye from the bank at Deer Creek? I come from MN where I fished for walleye a lot. I don't have a boat here but would love to get on some eyes in Utah.

503 347 4321
I would say the "SAFE" ice is up at Strawberry. Please don't take offense, but Late ice and early ice should be accessed by those who are experienced and can read ice themselves. It may be a completely different story up there by the time you get to go. Things can change quickly given weather and the amount of water flowing in. I don't feel comfortable telling you to go to a place that has questionable ice in places when you are with someone who is scared of the ice. My wife is scared of the ice, she fell through as a child. I would say your best bet is Strawberry on a nice sunny day.

Brad, if you don't mind the drive Fish Lake is safe, gorgeous, and LOADED with Perch but only 7-8" long. Fish the weed line in about 16' water and fill a bucket. Fish Lake is a real lake and not a reservoir and therefore does not have fluctuating water levels to create soft edges as easily.
Pick a day with sun and no wind and make a day of it, you won't regret it!

Perch are very tasty, like bass or walleye but they never have a mercury advisory due to the fact that they don't grow large on a diet of other fish with mercury in them. Plus if they're too small you just save them for bait. If you scale and fillet a smallish perch but leave the skin on you can cut their meat into strips with the skin still attached and substitute them for a worm in a worm harness.

Really my response was just an excuse for using my "Orem Municipal Reservoir" and "porcelain fish ladder" jokes. I've been itching to trot those out for a while.

I've never thought about using them on a worm harness, great idea. Curious though, why would you scale them?
