Snails
#1
I am wondering if any one has any experience with fishing with a snail imitation.
I often catch fish that are often totally full of them. You have to be careful while handling these fish as you can easily feel the snails crushing in their gut. I am pretty certain this damages the fish so it will die after release.
Any way. There are not high numbers of weeds in this water and I have never seen snails at this water clinging on the surface tension of the water so I assume they are picked up off the bottom. I often catch these snail laden fish while ice fishing.
I have been unable to come up with a suitable sustitute replica. Does any body know and care to share info. on what I could use to catch these fish?

Fly fishing with snail patterns is common on most trout waters. I tie a snail pattern by wrapping lead into a bead on a size 8 hook and then use peacock herl to form a circular shape that imitates a snail. I fish it slowly using a floating line.[reply][/reply]

I guess I could work similar in the shallows.
Thanks
