Strange Looking Catfish
#1
Was fishing for cats last night, when I got a funny pecking type bite, that usually is a small channel or bullhead type bite, but it was on my rod baited with a big ole chunk of carp meat, so that usually means channels only... I waited for it to seem to be there and laid into it... It was a pretty good fighter and I thought it was a carp, but when I seen it for a second it appeared to be too light in color... Well turned out to be a pleasant surprise... See below... Swallowed it clear to it's tail, had to cut the line to let it go, but was kind of fun... Later J

Oh, I'll have to attach picture below I don't have it on the computer... Later J

That's always a bonus when you catch something out of the ordinary. I bet that elusive 35 inch cat was down there about to slurp up your bait until that bass did a hit and run!

[#0000FF]Someday you gonna learn that the best way to catch any given species is to fish for something else.

Now get out your bass gear and go catch some cats.

Yes it was a nice surprise, pretty sure if I tried to find a LMB now I couldn't. Looks like the bass was following the carp as they are getting ready to spawn. Didn't know they did that, so maybe I learned something new. Now what should I target so I can catch a walleye? Later J

I wish that 35"er was there but I'm not finding anything with size at all. Probably need to move to a new area. But this spot works for hour trips so I guess that's why I like it. Later J

Hey Pat I'm just a slow learner. I should know better by now. Always fun to pick up something unexpected. I'll bet that's why you liked that sea of Cortez fishing so much. Catch ya later J

No it's up on Cutler. Usually just carp and catfish in the area I thought. Maybe I should try fishing for other stuff there too. Might find a new area for panfish too. Later J

Try this...

While your catfish bait is soaking, cast a bass lure. Preferably one that's expensive and sinks fast. Retrieving it over snaggy water insures that your catfish rod will go big bendo.

Or - what ALWAYS works for me - try to eat lunch while your catfish bait soaks. Nothing guarantees a sudden bite like balancing a plate on your knee while you sip a drink.

[#0000FF]Those who empty their "bladder bilge" over the side of the boat can testify to the effectiveness of that ploy to get a sudden strike as well.

Hey Rocky,
Wish I would have seen this post sooner, I needed something to help me out today, and maybe that would have done the trick... Seems like that usually happens to me when something is going on... Thanks J

I've caught the vast majority of mine while bass fishing Smile Good job on the bass. I've yet to wet a line this year and it's driving me nuts. I sure hope I get out soon.

It's almost time. The first cherry blossoms are coming out (and got frozen last night...) and that's my signal that fishing is about to get underway.

Hey Greg that's a good idea, several of mine have come while after bass. Hope you get out soon I love reading your reports and seeing the hogs you round up. Crazy deal up north, can you keep up with all the crazy boat regulations in Franklin county? I'd sure like it to be like it used to be so I could go up and have some fun, but anymore it's pretty tough knowing where you can fish and where you can't. Guess Hyrum has some nice ones. May have to learn where they are in the pond. Later J
