I was reading on how to properly get a fish in the record books and was just curious on a couple things. First, on the catch and keep record has anybody gone through this because I want to know where you can weigh your fish. It says grocery stores but I don't think that they want you carrying a big ole fish in there. I guess a dwr officer has to witness the species in writing to. How would I go about all this before the fish turned into a slimy rotten mess?
Thanks,

[#000000]LOL, it is not as hard as it sounds, but also not that easy.[/#000000]

The attached is the actual procedure and submission form, so print it out.
I doubt that Walmart will weigh your catch (call and ask the manager), but a lot of the smaller grocery stores will, especially in their meat market section. The meat market can produce the required weight receipt.
Once you have your fish, start calling ASAP, and keep the fish on ice, not frozen, but on ice. The scale only needs to be certified as indicated.

[#000000]Yes, a DWR must verify the length and girth, etc., but not the weighing process. The weight must be witnessed by two people that are not your relatives and not part of the fishing party, and they must do it in writing[/#000000].
Once you have your [#ff0000]side profile[/#ff0000] and [#0000bf]publicity photos[/#0000bf], and your weight, you can freeze the fish, but [#008000]I suggest you call the DWR first because getting the required length and girth can be difficult once frozen and you don't want to thaw it out.[/#008000]
[#0000ff]You can easily do this in one to two days, even fish cops work on Sunday and calling the poaching hot lines will get you to an officer that can take the measurements and confirm species.[/#0000ff]
These procedures are pretty much normal for most states. I was going to record a LMB in Washington but once I found that I had to reveal the Lake I caught it on I decided I did not want to destroy the lake that way. Once people find out that you caught a record fish on a body of water, the pressure will increase overnight. I did consider lying about the lake..... but ...
Now, if you think you can get a world record, then the IGFA might actually be easier to get. You don't need certified scales, etc. Still, you need to know how, so I will provide the procedure below.
https://www.igfa.org/Junior-Igfa-Records/How-to-submit.aspx
I hope this helps you. Have you considered the C&R records? Don't need scales, etc., and you can find that procedure on line as well.

A friend of mine, and member of the Fresh Water fishing hall of fame, and the IGFA Hall of Fame, says that the chances of catching a "big" fish are inversely proportional to how much you deserve to catch that fish.
His point is based on the number of world records that have been caught by people that either seldom fish or were inexperienced. Sometimes it all comes down to luck!
I bet your luck is as good as everyone else. So, good luck and may the next one be your record.

Hey thanks, I'm going through a big fish drought. Everyone seems to be catching big cats lately and I can't break 22". Other years 24"ers are automatic every trip type fish. Not this year. I've fished more and caught less than ever this spring. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. Hope I break out of this slump soon. Even last night with great conditions my biggest was 18". So let's hope for some good luck. Later J

Thanks! I was just wondering because I'm trying to catch a record carp. The record that stands right now could easily be beat. If I did actually try for a record trout or something like that I would do the CR. It's still a hassle so I wouldn't go out of my way just to trophy fish, and you're right about telling everybody where you caught such a fish because it would get 2× the pressure.

Better small fish then "skunked" Again. HEHE
I really feel that when the little cats start to feed it is a numbers game. You sort through lots of little ones to get to the big one.
You can go with 6/0 circle hooks and quarter to half pound chunks of meat, fish near and just after the sun sets, and the odds of catching a big cat increase, but the odds of getting skunked jump as well.

More like 10x the pressure. In the 80's I and a friend from my Army unit would fish Pueblo Reservoir South of Colorado Springs. We were both poor enlisted guys with wives and kids, and we all loved to eat Walleye, so we kept our limits every time we went down there. He loved to take the fish out of the live well and string them up and hook one end to the boat and string them out to him and take photos for his "family". He started to give these bragging photos to the local bait shops, and some even made it into the paper, so guess what! I would pull my boat on the water and 10 other boats followed me around the lake like I was the Pied Piper. NOT COOL.[mad] I painted my boat after that, stopped taking him fishing, ended our friendship, and made sure I never took him ever again.
Two or three of the Walleye we had pushed the Colorado State record at the time, but I never weighed them. The photos alone were all it took. I watched the fishing pressure on that lake grow in a month to the point where it was a half hour wait to get to the boat ramp every weekend.
I am far more careful of choosing friends now, and seldom take pictures. When I do, I sure don't tell people what body of water the fish came from.

32 pounds, I agree, it is easily beatable in Utah. I am a new return to the state, but I can think of a half dozen places where 36" + carp can be found. To break the 32# record, the carp will probably need to be close to 48". I personally hate carp, more specifically what they do to the habitat, but I do love to fight big fish, so I have been known to sight fish them with a flyrod and crayfish patterns when I catch them in clear water. Carp are "suckers" for crayfish and snails.
Just a favor, if you catch the "Carp" record, REPORT THAT PLACE. ROFLOL. Having 10x the pressure for carp would be a great thing.

No kidding huh, I would gladly give up my carp spot to the masses.
I found out the hard way to not tell specific "friends" about my honey holes to but they eventually con ya into going with you. Thanks again, see ya.

Well drought ended tonight. Got a 27 and 25.5"er so that felt a little better. Doing the same thing, same spot just the right night I guess. When the big boy grabbed it I knew something was different in a hurry. Fun fish for sure. Thanks for passing on some good luck. Later J

If it were easy, wouldn't it have already been done?
I hope one of you guys does break the record, and I hope to see some pictures of the beast you break the record with!
Good luck!

How many people fish for carp, specifically with a record in mind? Being easy does not mean it is something that would not take time and personally I don't care enough for a "record" of any species, especially CARP, to spend that kind of time.
Good luck!
